Hello folks, I'm Montigue M. from Charlottesville, VA (for those who don't know me). I'll be going to NYC in a few weeks, and I was looking for some good routes to ride along (both bus and rail; for photographic/audio recording purposes). I'd like a list of routes that are either fast, have good sceanery, or have "special"/diverse equipement on them. Oh, the list CAN include ALL MTA divisions, Suffolk Transit, and Bee-Line. I may also cross into NJT territory while I'm up there, so feel free to include some good NJT bus lines as well (especially routes that have Neo's or Metro-B's/D's on them....definately some RTS's).

One more thing, can the Unlimited use MetroCard be used on Bee-Line and Suffolk Transit now? I hope so, so I won't have to buy more than one pass.

Any info y'all can provide will be appreciated greatly.

Welcome aboard; scenic, I don't know about but interesting routes is another story that I am certain our NYC specialists will fill you in on.

Actually, your best bet on scenery would be the Westchester (BeeLine) routes where you can get a taste of what is more like upstate New York - and your timing is perfect because of the seasonal foliage color changes which can be spectacular.

If you're going to be in Manhattan after Thanksgiving, I would highly recommend a ride down Fifth Avenue (the old #5) to see the marvelous Christmas displays and especially the 'Lord and Taylor' windows.

New Jersey also offers great sights and beautiful countryside and all available via Port Authority Bus Terminal at Eighth Avenue in the mid forties.

Oh, and don't forget the Long Island Bus north shore routes that pass through the famous 'Gold Coast' of Nassau County.

(I should have been a travel agent) - not bad from sitting here in my office in Beverly Hills (Ca.)!

Heres a couple of routes you could try.

Brooklyn:
B2- This bus runs from the Midwood section of Brooklyn to the Kings Plaza Mall. The bus terminal at the mall is a great place for photos because many bus routes go there. You can connect to this route with the B and Q trains at the Kings hwy station.

B100- This bus goes from the Midwood section of Brooklyn to the Mill basin section of Brooklyn. There is also very little traffic so the bus moves at a nice speed. The route uses Orion VII Hybrids, Orion V CNG's and TMC RTSes. You can connect to the route with the B and Q subway lines at the Kings Hwy station in Midwood and the BM1 Express bus in Mill basin.

Manhattan:
M1- I would recomend to ride this route downtown from 86th street to battery place and state street. The would take you down 5th ave. along Central park and other sites on 5th ave. it would then turn somewhere around 40th street and run on Park ave. and Broadway all the way to the bottom of manhattan. When you get downtown Battery place is a great spot for photos because many express buses, local buses and buses from out of town pass here. The route uses Orion V diesels and Orion VII hybrids.

M79- the M79 runs crosstown on 79th street. THe route goes through Central Park and past the american Museum of natural history and other sites. The route uses New Flyer D60HF artics.

M104- Is another great route which runs down Broadway and the across 42nd street. It passes many sites including Times Square and Grand central

Express:
BM3: This bus runs from Midtown Manhattan to Sheepshead bay Brooklyn.
the route uses MCI D4500's and Orion V CNG's originally from Triboro Coach and Command.

QM4:This Route runs from Midtown Manhattan to Electchester Queens. The route enters manhattan through the Midtown Tunnel and leaves through the 59th street bridge. The route runs MCI D4500's.

These folks have some great suggestions.
I'd also suggest the M4 from Penn Station to The Cloisters in Upper Manhattan. It draws RTS's and Orion VII HEV's from Manhattanville Depot.
(The Cloisters is a cool medieval art museum, too, and is well worth a visit.)
The Q32 also starts at Penn Station, and heads over the Queensboro Bridge into my home borough of Queens, terminating at 82nd St. & Northern Blvd. in Jackson Heights. It is a split route, drawing RTS's based at Michael J. Quill Depot (Manhattan Div'n.) and Orion V diesels or (occasionally) Orion VII HEV's based at Casey Stengel Depot (Queens Division).

As for intra-New York City routes, I'd have to recommend the QBx1 -- that's my favorite route. This route is relatively fast, it uses Orion V CNGs, and it goes over the Whitestone Bridge (an excellent view of the skyline.) Just make sure you don't take it during rush hours, or you'll get caught in traffic on the bridge.

For New Jersey, in addition to the Port Authority Bus Terminal (as Mr. Linsky stated) you can also take the PATH train to Jersey City (Journal Square, Grove Street, Exchange Place, Pavonia-Newport stations) or Hoboken and take New Jersey Transit buses from those locations.

Suffolk Transit isn't as interesting as it once was, now that the Flxibles are gone. Also, it takes a long to get out there (you have to sit on the LIRR for a while) -- but some of the routes are very fast, not to mention that the scenery is nice as well.

Bee-Line is a fairly good system, as it's accessible from many points in the Bronx. Unfortunately the Flxibles are gone, but you've still got three kinds of Orion Vs, Neoplan artics, and MCI 102-A2s.
