AC Transit fleet to test alternative fuels
Chronicle Staff Report
Tuesday, October 23, 2007
(10-22) 18:43 PDT Oakland -- A pilot program to test two types of alternative fuels in AC Transit buses goes into full gear Tuesday, according AC Transit and Chevron officials.
The 6-month program will test biodiesel and natural gas-to-liquid fuels in 22 buses to see how the performance compares to the current fuel, ultra low-sulfur diesel, said Chevron spokesman Leif Sollid.
The test is a joint effort by the East Bay bus service, Chevron Products Co., and engine-maker Cummins to learn more about how different fuels' perform and their effects on the bus engines, Sollid said.
The program is being launched by local officials and students from Oakland Tech and Berkeley High science classes in a ceremony Tuesday at 10 a.m. at AC Transit's Seminary Division at 1100 Seminary Ave. in Oakland. Following preliminary tests, the full test fleet also begins rolling Tuesday, Sollid said.
