From the Oct. 2007 issue of NY ERA's The Bulletin (and dedicated to our good friends Mr. Linsky and GBL Rebel) is a story about a traction company that is the predecessor of today's Q60:

"The Manhattan & Queens Traction Corp. was a little known Queens company whose cars ceased operating on Queens Blvd. on 4/17/37, only a week before the IND was extended from Union Tpke. to 169 St. The trolley cars operated from E. 59 St. & 2 Ave., Manhattan via the Queensboro Bridge, Bridge Plaza, Queens Blvd., Jamaica Ave., 139 St., Archer Ave., Sutphin Blvd., and 109 Ave. to 157 St. Cars started operting from E. 59 St. & 2 Ave. to Woodside on January 29, 1913. The line was extended gradually as follows:
Winfield, 4/26/13
Grand Ave., Elmhurst, 7/28/13
Continental (71) Ave., 8/27/13
LIRR Jamaica Station, 1/31/14
South Rd., 4/18/16
Shore Ave., 4/20/16
Lambertsville, 4/26/16
109 Ave. & 157 St., 1918
Most of the cars were center entrance cars that resembled B&QT's 5000 series before the latter were rebuilt for one-man operation. The company was always in poor financial condition because it operated a long line serving sparsely populated territory. During the postwar inflation, the company's financial condition grew worse. The Public Service Commission allowed the company to divide the line into 2 zones. Effective 12/10/20, conductors collected an additional nickel at Grand Ave. The company was able to continue operating the cars a little longer until the equipment was thoroughly worn out. Buses replaced trolley cars on 4/17/37."

"Sparsely Populated"-- Had they only known what that line would have turned into years later. Buses or trolley cars don't matter, there's plenty of people for that line now. If there was a way for them to stay in business, they would have finally seen the money.

Thanks for the dedication.

Thanks Bob!

Being that this is your feature, I won't add too much except to put your words in a picture below.

This is a Manhattan and Queens Traction Company center entrance street car seen on Archer Avenue passing by the Long Island Rail Road main office in Jamaica circa the early thirties.

Operations did cease in 1937 to be taken over by the Manhattan and Queens Bus Corporation which then merged into Green Bus Lines in 1943.

That's all folks!

My information is that M & Q Traction was cut back to just Queensboro Bridge operation in the 20's. And the name was changed to Queensboro Bridge Ry then.
In 1929 it acquired Cincinnati trolley cars from the defunk Manhattan Bridge 3-Cent Ry. In 1949 it acquired the last cars, Osgood Bradley "Electromobiles" from New Bedford.
By this time it was under the control by H. E. Salzberg.

It would be helpful if someone has photos of trolley cars operating on Queens Blvd while the IND was being constructed. That would extend the date dfrom the 20s to the 30s.

O.K. Mr. RT,

Below are the following photos;

#1; An M and Q Traction at Bridge Plaza in Long Island City.

#2; M and Q Traction tracks along Queens Boulevard in vicinity of Kew Gardens.

#3; an M and Q trolley traveling along Queens Boulevard in Rego Park after the reconstruction of the roadway for the subway underneath.

#4; a 1946 GM TDH 4506 fleet # 210 operating for Manhattan and Queens Bus Corporation - a subsidiary of Green Bus Lines.

#5; a panorama of Queens Boulevard and Union Turnpike showing the M and Q catenary wires, tracks and the rebuilt boulevard after subway installation - circa 1936.

All photos have been borrowed for educational purposes and have been credited elsewhere in these forums.

I wrote an interesting little piece entitled 'Queens Boulevard Rapid Transit' (see link below) some time ago which may support information that Bob found concerning trolley operations on that boulevard.

Notice in the 'Panoramic View' within the link the completed construction of the subway (street ventilators) along with the trolley tracks.

Enjoy!

Dennis, Thanks for the input.
I had thought I had seen some photos of trolleys operating on Queens Blvd. while the subway was being constructed below.

Mr. RT,

You're welcome, but I'm afraid you have the wrong Linsky although Dennis (no relation that I know of) did originally supply the Manahattan and Queens TD 4506 # 210 picture for which I will be ever thankful!

That's O.K., one Linsky or the other - I think we both do a pretty good job!

No our Mr. Linsky of Green Bus Lines fame is not Dennis Linsky, with the large black rimmed eyeglasses we saw at Rutgers.

Our Mr Linsky has a different first name. Don't know if he wants me to reveal it, but it certainly isn't Kermit.
