Top photo is 101 again. The black & white photo gives this a vintage time period look even though it was taken around the same time as the color photo above.

Middle photo is #507, a Mack C-45 DT in Rockville Center. This photo was taken before 1956 as evident by the non-standardize size license plate.

Bottom photo is #349, a White 798 also in Rockville Center. Not sure when this was taken.

Bottom two photos courtesy of eBay.

Frankie The White in the lower photo is parked on 165 St. in front of the Long Island Bus Terminal in Jamaica.

In a photo taken sometime around the end of the war we see fleet # 321 - a 1944 44 passenger White Motor Company Model 798 and one of what according to updated records indicate as being at least fifty likenesses numbered in the lower half of the 300's and delivered in increments between 1944 and 1945 to Bee Line, Inc. of Rockville Centre, New York.

One of White's most popular models and the largest transit in their catalog at the time, the 35 foot long 44 passenger 798 gained its power from an underfloor amidships 681 cubic inch V-12 gasoline engine and nearly 3300 were manufactured between 1940 and 1948.

Of note is the well camouflaged air intake in the form of a bead over the destination sign to feed the New York mandated full time mechanical ventilation system.

While the company seemed to like pre war White's and bought the last of them in 1945, they were not enamoured with the manufacturer's new line introduced in 1946 thus switching to Mack and GM for product.

#321 is seen during a warm sunny day about to turn off Hempstead Avenue in Queens returning to Jamaica Terminal from Hempstead via Hempstead Turnpike and Hempstead Avenue and will make a stop at the IND Subway station at 168th. Street and Hillside Avenue.

Of note (stage left) and continuing along Hempstead Avenue is fleet # 20 - a 1939 Twin Coach Model 40-RL operating for North Shore Bus Company.

To the right is # 565 which I believe may be a TDH 4517 and which does not appear in the OMT record as being originally purchased by the company.

However, the TDH 4517 record does show that fleet #'s 566 to 570 were purchased in October of 1961 - 565 could have been a demo or bought used.

The second bus is very obviously a perfectly restored Bee Line ACF circa very early thirties.

Enjoy.

Could Bee Line fishbowl 565 be an ex Utility Line or Rockville Centre Bus? Each had a nwmber of 4517's in their fleet.

NorthShore,

According to our records here at BusTalk, Bee Line GM New Look # 565 was a demonstrator that eventually went to MSBA keeping its same fleet assignment.

'S-60 To Smith Haven Mall', take note;

Seen sometime in the forties somewhere in southwestern Nassau County (possibly along Merrick Road) and signed for Jamaica - 8th. Avenue Subway is fleet #228 - a 1937 41 passenger ACF modeled as an H-16-S and one of two likenesses with the other numbered 229 operating for Bee Line, Inc. of Rockville Centre, New York.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall's Bee Line (L.I.) roster under Vintage Nassau County elsewhere on the board indicates that H-16-S # 229 was purchased used from the Short Line so it may be assumed that our focus came from the same source.

Looking at the photo might give you a good idea as to why New Jersey mandated either window bars or passenger safety split sashes on all buses ordered for service in that state.

Regarding Bee Line 565...

This is a TDH-4517 serial number 069.

My sources tell me (very reliable sources!) that this bus in particular was a demonstrator intended specially for Cuba.

(Shortly before the Communist take-over, Havana operator Cooperativa de Omnibus Aliados (Allied Bus Cooperative) decided that all future orders would be of 45 passenger capacity and manufactured by GM)

However, because of the government turmoil the bus was sold to Bee Line in April 1960.

Every time I think I've seen it all from prewar Bee Line (L.I.) doesn't another one crop up to prove me wrong!

In this great shot of Long Beach 1945 we see fleet # 263 - a 1936 37 passenger Mack modeled as a 6-CT-3S as it arrives at the Long Island Railroad Station from Hempstead.

The model 'CT' which was introduced in 1935 and was among the first Macks to feature a transversely mounted rear engine which, in this case, was a 525 cubic inch 125 hp. six cylinder gasoline plant couple to a three speed mechanical transmission via a patented angle drive.

The original CT, as seen in the image, was short lived and succeeded by an 'improved' version in 1937 with more contoured lines that made it less boxy.

This writer has fond memories of Long Beach when, at the age of five in 1943, he traveled daily with his older brother by train from Kew Gardens (changing at Jamaica, of course) to summer day camp in the West End of the city.

If you look closely at the cobblestone street you can still see the remnant of a one track trolley line that had been abandoned by the early twenties.

Seen when brand new at its company facility is fleet # 700 - a 1964 Flxible modeled as an FD6V-401-7-UL-AC operating for Bee Line, Inc. of Rockville Centre, New York.

# 700, in a striking version of the company's usual bright red and white livery scheme, was a rare break in tradition for Bee Line being a single door Suburban version with comfortable high back seating and parcel racks in place of standee glasses.

Note that while Ohio Museum of Transportation (OMT) records under 'Flxible FD-35 Suburban Model' indicate that only #700 was delivered to Bee Line, rosters here at BusTalk show a second likeness numbered 701.

However, at the same time an identical model numbered 400 was flagged for and delivered to commonly owned Utility Lines, Inc., of Patchogue, New York and may or may not fit into this puzzle - I will have to allow greater minds to figure this out!

Photo courtesy of 'exbusdriver53' and is available at eBay as item # 221467142362.
