From what I've read, that subway entrance (where the RTS was in the background) was at Columbus Circle; as I had stated earlier, you can see an "IRT 7th Avenue" sign over the stairway going down into the station........

How many buses did the "Em-Tee-Yay" roster with the "PA" prefix before the number?

I seem to recall a picture or two of "Borough Bombers" also carrying the "PA" prefix but now I am not at all sure.
Did these buses carry this "PA" prefix until retirement, or were the prefixes later dropped?

I think it was a case of some having the "PA's" before retirement, and others being shorn of it. Like this one:

OMOT is unfortunately vague about a lot of the production of the "Torpedos," with a lot of gaps, but I'd venture about 800 total were originally purchased by the "Port-of-Authority" and leased to the "Tee-Yay" and " 'stoa." Including a few of the ill-fated "Borough Bombers."
Of course, whatever still had "Pee-Yay" branding as of 1993-94 (when the "angled MTA" logo first came forth) would disappear after the new logo (which also saw numerals dating back to B&QT and Brooklyn Bus days disappearing into the ether. |

Thanks; this is EXACTLY the info I was looking for!
Interesting, too, that these buses weren't the first "Noo Yawk" buses to have prefixes in front of the numbers; recall in the early "stoa" era, when the ex-"Tee-Yay" buses had a "T" prefix before the number, while the ex-SURFACE buses had an "S" prefix.............

Wanted to bring this up (as we had been talking about "INDY" Jones and "Crocodile" Dundee)...........
In 1990's supernatural flick "GHOST", these station entrances at Christopher Street and Broad Street were seen............

As I am NOT a fan of such flicks, I only recall one station sequence (while channel surfing) years ago; I HAD thought that this scene (which I just barely remember) used the abandoned (now demolished) IND lower level platform at 42nd Street.
Did a little research and discovered it was just a set, and not an actual station.
However, I DID find out that the station entrances at Christopher Street and Broad Street were used.............

The Q44 likely had the largest number of alpha-numeric variations of any NYC bus route: Q44A-Union Turnpike (now Q46); Q44B-Malba Shuttle (gone); Q44FS-Flushing Shuttle (basically replaced by the Q20B between Flushing and College Point); and the aforementioned Q44VP-Vleigh Place (gone). |

Again, I thank you for this information; I had not the slightest clue that this route had so many "variants".
This, now, has me thinking of the vintage bus photos at nycsubway.org; it seems as though the NYCTA/MTA photos showing buses on Queens routes are in the minority, with most photos focusing on routes in Manhattan and Brooklyn (Staten Island, also, has relatively few photos)
I often wonder why there are not as many Queens bus photos as there are of buses in Manhattan and Brooklyn (the majority of Queens bus photos appear to be from the old independent companies that were absorbed into the MTA some years ago).............

The first of those pics had a green "Dangerfield" lurking way behind . . .
But the "Tee-Yay's" domain in Queens in those days were in "Zones B and D."
And how many pics of "da Bronx" are there, regardless of when taken, compared to Manhattan and Brooklyn, considering how few in Queens and "Ess-Eye"? I suppose somewhere in the middle in terms of quantity . . . |

MaBSTOA tried that with two Manhattan routes, using alphanumeric variants. First in 1966 when Fifth and Madison became one-way, they had the "brilliant" idea of merging the FACCo and NYCO #2's into one route, with the former ("via Seventh Avenue") adopting the alphanumeric variant 2A which held through 1974. (On transcripts of proceedings, but not on roll signs themselves, they designated the Convent Avenue variant of their 3 line as 3A.) Then when the #2 line "via Lenox" was discontinued in 1969, they started up a new variant of the 101 called 101A which terminated north at 147th and Lenox - and was basically a recasting of the old 1936-60 NYCO #4 Lexington-Lenox route. (And was rebranded M102 in 1974.) But as far as that side, the alphanumeric variations of Bronx lines are a story in and of themselves. |

Believe me, Your's Truly has MORE than noticed that 1970's-era photos of "stoa" buses in "da Bronx" are indeed far fewer in number than those showing the buses operating in Manhattan.
Yes, "da Bronx" WAS rapidly hitting the skids back then, BUT, by comparison, look at the tremendous number of SUBWAY photos from that era, taken in "da Bronx" at nycsubway.org.
Perhaps, the transit photographers of that day felt safer on platforms, or in stations, than they did on the streets?
Too, look at the tremendous number of (bus) photos (at nycsubway.org) taken in Brooklyn, and compare those to the number of (TA/MTA) bus photos taken in Queens.
What I REALLY feel is glaringly lacking are photos from the early "stoa" era (1962-1966); I sure would like to see early photos of buses carrying both "T" and "S" prefixes (again, such photos are not to be found at nycsubway.org)
Too, where are the late FACL/SURFACE photos, especially those depicting "Pattons" and "Jetsons"?
