The (3rd Avenue El) City Hall Terminal, before and after the demolition of the vast BMT Park Row* elevated terminal......

*It is interesting to note, that, after the BMT El trains over the Brooklyn Bridge stopped running in 1944, the streetcars that crossed the bridge were shifted over to the former El tracks, to allow for an additional traffic lane.
The streetcars continued to cross the bridge until 1950. |

After the demolition of the old Park Row terminal complex in 1944, the multiple trolley loops were exposed to the elements.
In the second photo, note the old deck-roof car in the distance; this car was then OOS, and being used as a heated waiting area for trolley passengers......

Here's a post-1944 view showing a B&QT PCC running along the former BMT El tracks on the Brooklyn Bridge.....

As TARS streetcars have also been mentioned in this discussion, I thought it appropriate to include this link on unearthing long-buried TARS conduit tracks, back in 1996......

Ten years (1963-1973) are represented here in these two vintage views at Gun Hill Road, when "double-deck rapid-transit action" was still the order of the day (not even a hint of graffiti in 1963!)

*(two prewar IRT trains are seen here, as well as an Old Look SURFACE bus)

Gun Hill Road, 1963.
On the upper level of the station we see a train of then-new R-33's; on the lower level (serving 3rd Avenue trains) are 1938 WF cars.
For a number of years now, these last of the INTERBOROUGH cars were assigned exclusively to the 3rd Avenue El; in 1969, all prewar IRT cars were retired......

When this now-timeless photo was napped of Fishbowl #8478 at Chatham Square and E. Broadway, back in 1972, the Manhattan section of the 3rd Avenue El had been gone 17 years.
Again, a good deal of "street nostalgia", here.......
