When fan trips were fun and exciting (and featured QUITE a bit of variety, equipment-wise!)

Looking east from the Manhattan (Tram) terminal, 2002.

The soaring steel support towers for the tram cables are quite impressive.....

Back in 1958, we see a train of BMT "Triplex" units approaching the QP station complex; the severed connection to the 2nd Avenue El tracks over the QB Bridge are clearly seen here, to the left of the train......

Here is QB Ry car #601 about to enter the portal at the Manhattan terminal; STEINWAY buses also used this portal, upon leaving the bridge, and entering the underground station.....

The long-gone QB Ry was also quite unique in that the cars made a station stop on the Bridge itself, high above the East River........

When STEINWAY LINES abandoned its streetcar operations, its route over the Queensborough Bridge was sold to the QB Ry, which intended to utilize ex-STEINWAY equipment.

However, the City decided that the old streetcars had to be modified for "safe bridge operation"; while these cars were being updated, TARS leased the QB Ry some of its more modern cars as temporary replacements.

Just prior to 1950, the older cars were replaced by second-hand, streamlined cars from New Bedford, Mass., which were used until the line closed in 1957.......

Here's an interesting picture (circa-1949) showing an ex-TARS car alongside one of the newer, second-hand cars from New Bedford, before repainting/refurbishing.......

At first glance, it appear that this ex-TARS/QB Ry streetcar is a rubber-tired vehicle; actually, the now-redundant car is being hauled away to the scrapyard by a flatbed.

As noted earlier, more modern cars from New Bedford replaced the older ex-TARS cars on the QB Ry about 1949.......

In discussing Roosevelt Island and its transportation connections to Manhattan, it is important to remember the Roosevelt Island was once Welfare Island, a City institution.

Until 1956, the only single-ended ferry owned by the City, the 1930 "WELFARE" ran between E. 78th St. in Manhattan to Welfare Island.

This small vessel did not carry any vehicles; she had the capacity of 245 passengers; her relief boat on this non-public line was the double-ended "ROCKAWAY".......
