It would have been interesting for certain had "NYCO" and "EIGHTH AVENUE" remained "indy", at least until the "Tee-Yay" era............

Sidenote:

Both the Mets and the Yankees won today(!!) Wink

(The "Amazins' took their first series of the vear!) Very Happy

And, on April 8th of 1974, the legendary Hank Aaron, with one mighty swing of his bat, made baseball history in Atlanta (this was still years before the MARTA rapid transit system was built); "715" was indeed the magic number for Mr. Aaron that day!)

Batter up, Hank! Wink

(Recall, Atlanta also operated trolley buses until 1963)

And of course, since this is a baseball thread, we can't overlook the retirement, effective yesterday and immediately, of longtime Yankees announcer John Sterling. He'd been on WMCA 570 in the '70's as a talk show host, when Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" ruled the NYC streets above ground, the "Little Red Bus That Could" still transported passengers around lower Manhattan, the "Arnines" were about to be retired, and even with the remaining fleet all postwar, there was still a semblance of variety in our subway fleet; as he departs the scene, all that's left are above-ground (tuneless) Wurlitzers, Slinkies and milk cartons; and underground, mainly rolling iPads though the "Hippos" that dated to Sterling's first taking the Yankees announcing gig are still here.

W.B.:

Yes, I had been following the news of John Sterling's retirement; indeed, end of a long and colorful era in "Noo Yawk" baseball.

Indeed, transit-wise, the City still had much to offer the transit enthusiast, back in Mr. Sterling's heyday, starting with WMCA (no "Cyclopicus Electricus" or "rolling iPads" slithering BENEATH the streets, and no "Wurlitzers" or milk cartons ON the streets)

Mr. Sterling's retirement (and we all wish him well) also serves to recall how many years it has now been since the last game was played at the original "House That Ruth Built" was still standing, and "SMEE" equipment ruled the "Eye-Are-Tee".............

Just heard on 1010 WINS the passing of Carl Erskine of the Brooklyn Dodgers (aka "Dem Bums"); he was 97. Sad

See:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Erskine

Back in his Brooklyn Dodger days, Brooklyn was indeed a transit buffs paradise, a teeming borough where the "Bee-Em-Tee" still ruled, and several El lines still operated, not to mention the complex ganglia of streetcar, trolleybus, and bus lines.

And, of course, the LIRR's big, owl-eyed MP-54 MU's growling and humming along the rails.

RIP, Mr. Erskine.................

And the "baseball pendulum" is swingin' once again.........

The Amazins' have won their last three games, and are now above 500 for the first time this season. Very Happy

The "Bombers", on the other hand, just lost their third game in row earlier Question

QUITE a turn-around from the beginning of the 2024 season......... Rolling Eyes

The Mets are off tonight (well, after staging the comeback they have, I would think a "a bit o' rest for the weary" is indeed in order)....... Wink

To add insult to injury, the "Bombers" (whose performance of late seems to have more in common with the late, but questionable about the "lamented" part, Grumman buses, than the "classic" Yankee teams of old) had to ruin the commemoration of John Sterling's retirement from the Yankees radio broadcast booth, didn't they? By losing, of course.

W.B.:

As you correctly stated awhile back, the "pendulum" in baseball is forever swinging back and forth.

When one "Noo Yawk" team is riding high, the other, it seems is on a downturn.

Too bad the "Bombers" could not have won on the very day of Mr. Sterling's retirement......would have made a great "parting shot" for sure.......
