Here's an nostalgic (and VERY early!) AMTRAK scene at Metropark; note the classic NP/CB&Q sleeper............

Here's a true "heritage fleet" AMTRAK train, snapped at Chicago, back in 1972.
Note the ex-UP, PRR, and GN cars..............

Still wearing somber P-C black (but now lettered for AMTRAK) we see a hulking GG-1 heading a train at Trenton, back in 1975.
Somehow, oddly enough, the black paint seemed to emphasize the tough "no -nonsense" persona of these massive electrical machines................

Its days of being attired in the NH's flamboyant McGuiness regalia long over, this hard-working ex-NH FL9 is seen here at Croton-Harmon, hauling an Amfleet consist, back in 1991...............

Here's some interesting GG-1 trivia:
1958: During a massive blizzard early in the new year, nearly all of the GG-1s were crippled, when fine snow crystals worked their way into the engines' air-intake filters and into their traction motors; passenger service was in chaos for days afterwards. To solve this issue, the application of boxy grills were applied just below the pantographs, on a number of Gs.
1966: #4831 had the dubious distinction of being the first GG-1 to be scrapped.
1967: New timetables included New York-Washington runs that called for speeds of 100 mph.
1968: On a sad note, G's #'s 4901 and 4903 were assigned RFK's funeral train from New York to Washington.
1969: As a result of the P-C merger, GG-1s could now run as afar as New Haven.
1978: The barely 10-year old METROLINER cars were withdrawn for rebuilding; trains hauled by G's took up the slack.
1979: ConRail pulls the plug on freight-hauling Gs.
1981: AMTRAK replaces the last G's with E60s and new AEM-7s.
1983: The last few operating Gs (running between South Amboy and New York with NJT's North Jersey Coast trains) are retired in October...............

It's 1975, and we see GG-1 #924 heading a train at Trenton; note the large grills just below the pans..............

AMTRAK "G" #4935.............
This historic engine made her last revenue run in December, 1980, leading a double-headed "SILVER METEOR" out of New York.
In 1977, #4935 headed the nation's last RPO train (NY-DC)
By the time that NJT's handful of "Gs" were retired in 1983, #4935 was already a part of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania's collection at Strasburg-----------

Here's "G" #920 at Philadelphia, heading a train for New York, back in 1975.
As I had noted earlier here, the somber black many "Gs" wore in later years further emphasized their fearsome, solid, "no nonsense" appearance.
And yet, they never lost that proud, graceful look that made them so distinctive.......

...........n sharp contrast to today's Penn Station, here are two nostalgic interior views of the lofty glass-and-steel train concourse from 1963 (I STILL recall those grimy, sooty windows!)
This is exactly how I remember this venerable and historic old station, 60-odd years ago, as a railroad-infatuated youngster (the train caller's voice, echoing throughout the cavernous depot, was like hearing Charlton Heston as the "Voice of the Almighty"!)

Here's a detailed "in depth" page on Newark's historic Penn Station, and integral part of AMTRAK's NEC operations; when the station opened in 1935, it served the PRR and LV.
In 1937, it also began serving the H&M tubes and the Newark City Subway.
In 1967, the station also began serving the trains of the CNJ (and RDG), which had been re-routed away from the CNJ's Jersey City ferry terminal, when the Aldene Plan went into effect............
