W.B.:

Agreed.

A number of times, I have seen scanned images (which were less than "crisp" beforehand to begin with) and said to myself:

"Why even bother to put this picture up in the first place" Rolling Eyes

A very good friend of mine is well-known in classic truck circles, and he has done many outstanding colorizations of old b/w truck photos (once in awhile, he'll also do buses); he's even had a great many published in vintage truck publications.

I know, from him, that there is a LOT of work involved here, regarding "clean up", re-sizing, scanning, etc.

A LOT Of PATIENCE, for certain, is required in this deft and intricate "art".

We HAVE to be VERY grateful to those transit enthusiasts of decades ago, who used their cameras to capture so many historic transit vehicles (and their related infrastructure), so that we, today, can either relive old memories, or, many times, to see what was before our time.....

Looks like that was the TDH-4510 underneath . . . 'tis the rear windows' distance that tells the tale . . . the others' were much closer.

If 4507's, more 1947. But I think there may've been a 5101 in that pic.

W.B.:

I'm guessing that the "Tee-Yay" retired the last square-window Old Looks about 1964 or 1965?

Or, a few years earlier?

I know that some ex-FACCL square window Old Looks were still cavorting around in 1962.......

I know in MaBSTOA's case, the last "square windows" - meaning, the 4507's - would have been retired in 1964-65 when the 325-Fishbowl order (5201-5525) arrived and was divvied up amongst most Manhattan depots except the sardine-can 12th Street garage. Possible that might've been the case with the 'Tee-Yay' as well, given that that was when they got their 165-"Dangerfield" order (5001-5165).

And again, that '62 pic of a beat-up 4507 (the first of an order originally reserved for Madison Avenue Coach) traversing the #11 route was taken at Ninth Avenue between 50th and 51st Street, facing north-northwest. Here's how it looks with a bit of its color more restored:

W.B.:

The colors really "POP" on that "enhanced" version!!! Wink Shocked

I am thinking now of an old 1960's postcard I have (but haven't seen in ages) showing Radio City Music Hall.

A square-window Old Look ("Sherman") is passing by, with a new Mustang in the view (recall, the first Mustangs were the '64 models).

The taxis were then still sporting a rainbow of colors.

Also, a few Fishbowls and 4104's are seen as well.

So, this would date the postcard to, most likely, 1964, or, possibly, 1965....

Too bad we can't make out what movie Radio City Music Hall was playing at the time . . . that square-windowed 'Sherman' was either a #6 or #7 bus [the original ex-NYCO #5 was discontinued in 1963 nearly two weeks before the JFK assassination - and on the same day the ex-FACCo #5's southernmost terminus was shifted to Houston and West Broadway, and they began their own penetration of Sixth Avenue (only up to 8th Street until the 1966 Fifth and Madison one-way convesions)]. But . . . the original MaBSTOA badge was below the driver's window, so it could've been '63 in the last months of that original NYCO #5 - and as the Mustang was the new kid on the block.

W.B.:

Appreciate, as always, the additional historical info you always provide. Sad

I was thinking the same as you; if we could only decipher what movie was playing at the Hall in that postcard, we would have wasily been able to pinpoint the year that the postcard was printed.

The new Mustangs would have just been in the showrooms (my cousin, who had just graduated high school was presented to a new '64 Mustang from her parents in June.....what a gift! Very Happy

Here in "Joisey", the last Your's Truly can remember seeing square-window "Shermans" in my general area, was late 1966/early 1967.

This would have been about the time the MACKS ("Pattons") and WHITES were just beginning to disappear.......
