Just thinking...........
Back in the early/mid-1980s, I remember a number of times riding aboard an MC-7 on the former O&B's rush hour "RIVER ROAD EXPRESS".
This was back in NJT's early days, and there was then indeed an interesting variety of buses to ride on, on any given route.
I've always wondered if the "7s" I rode were ex-GREYHOUND..........

"BLUE BIRD"...............
The July, 1998 issue of "BUS WORLD" featured an excellent story (along with a number of great photos!) on "BLUE BIRD".
One particularly interesting photo was taken in 1964, featuring a uniformed driver, along with several dapper company officials, posing with two new 4106s, which were specially purchased for service to the World's Fair.
These buses (according to the article) also had the distinction of being the first new buses purchased by the company.....

"DEREGULATION"....................
In the 2/83 issue of "BUS WORLD" there is a lengthy, in-depth, well-written article of deregulation:
"IT'S A NEW GAME" (By Joe Richards)
Heading reads:
"......with the deregulation of the intercity bus industry, the rules have changed, but the long-term effect is yet to be seen......."
This article also includes an excellet analyis by "BUS TALK":
"......although GREYHOUND and TRAILWAYS will undoubtedly expand under the new rules, they cannot engage in predatory practices designed to eliminate competition such as selling far below cost......"
".....this new competition should also stimulate the demand for both new and used buses, and this comes at a time when MCI, EAGLE, PREVOST, and NEOPLAN USA have all increased their production ability for new buses.............."
Hard to believe that this was written over 40 years ago..........

Note:
Regarding the aforementioned 1983 "BUS WORLD" article on degulation, note that EAGLE coaches are mentioned; of course, the EAGLE era has long-since passed on down the echoing corridors of time............

Just thinking...........
Technically speaking, suburban bus operators also could well be considered "intercity" carriers, seeing that they connected many suburban towns with urban hubs.
Here in "Joisey", virtually all of the long-established suburban carriers have long since bit the dust (either absorbed into NJT, or simply going out of business)........

Isn't Suburban Transit, still running, along with Rockland Coaches, Short Line, Olympia, and other Coach USA companies?
And what about Academy? Academy started as New York-Keansburg-Long Branch successor, and absorbed Asbury Park - New York (Rollo) Transit, and other lines thru the years... |

traildriver:
Ever since "COACH USA" arrived on the scene, I have pretty much "lost contact" to just what is operating today; ACADEMY, long a strong fixture in my area for years (local transit routes), I've also been out of touch with for years, as NJT took over both ACADEMY's "22" and "BOULEVARD EAST" routes, over 20 years back.
SUBURBAN, I thought, became part of NJT years ago, but, I know you are most certainly far more "in sync" with current operators than I am.
I have not been in the city, nor even anywhere near the Lincoln Tunnel, since I retired back in early 2004, so I am most certainly "out of the loop", regarding non-NJT operations.
RED & TAN I DO know is now part of COACH USA, and has been for years.
Thanks for your input, as always........
