Ironic.........
.......when you think that, through the 1940's, one COULD reach La Guardia Airport via rail (albeit, a B&QT streetcar, back in the days of DC-3's and Constellations); today, two decades into the 21st century, there is no rail link whatsoever (either rapid transit or heavy rail) to this airport.
Again, sad to say, New York is light-years behind many other cities; cities that have airports served by rapid transit, heavy rail, and light rail.
Direct rail access to an airport in a densely-populated metropolitan area would, indeed, seem a given.
The old, long-defunct "JFK EXPRESS" was, at best, a half-hearted attempt to at least bring a PARTIAL rail "connection" to JFK; in reality, all the much-hyped JFK Express was , was but a "souped-up 'A' train", accompanied by much hoopla and media advertising.
So far as far as waiting for direct rail service to JFK and La Guardia........it would seem that the wait is, indeed, forever and a day........

This BART operation, interestingly, is a an automated guideway system, used to connect to BART's rapid transit trains.......*

From 2014:
"Revisiting An N Train Extension To La Guardia"*.......
www.secondavenuesagas.com/2014/02/06/revisiting-an-n-train-extension-to-laguardia/
*It is quite interesting to see how the subway itself would have been extended out to La Guardia Airport, utilizing an elevated ROW alongside the Grand Central Parkway, after passing above Sunnyside Yards (ahhh, if only the IND line to the 1939-1940 World's Fair had not been ripped up, after the Fair closed).......

Old meets new at the IND's Howard Beach-JFK station, back in 1978.
At least, the roller curtains on the grimy old R-10's are telling the TRUTH, as to the train's final destination; the roller sign on the "Train To The Plane" R-44 (displaying a jet graphic) on the right, should have had, at the very least, the graphic of a BUS superimposed over it, seeing, as a BUS connection was still required for passengers to reach JFK!
Ahhh, truth in advertising!

That would be my way of doing it...not the convoluted plan they have decided on. |

traildriver:
I was thinking much along the same lines as you; IMHO, the ripping up the "World's Fair Railroad" (IND) after the Fair closed was a tremendous mistake; had that same line still been intact today, my guess is that it would be a heavily-traveled route (then again, this has always held true for the IND's "trunk lines" through Queens)
Had the IND's World's Fair Station been retained for service, had the line not been dismantled, it would have been one less station to build (had the area around the closed Fairgrounds been built up)
It would be interesting to see just how that line, if still in use today, spurred future real estate development......
