Though this fearsome airborne monster (Indian Air Force) is NOT "civil", nor "friendly", it certainly deserves inclusion here (this is another interesting page with several photos)........

Gentlemen:

They often say that "truth is stranger than fiction"; when someone mentions the "Rolling Stones", it is a safe bet that a Lockheed "Connie" would NOT be generally associated with them! Shocked

Here is a VERY interesting story that revolves around this ex-KLM Constellation (and the Rolling Stones tour), which, after its last flight for "LANZAIR" back in the 70's, was abandoned.

Thankfully, this story has a HAPPY ending......... Very Happy

The following page link is related to the previous post, but on a somber, tragic note (El-Al Flight #402, a Constellation flying from London to Tel Aviv, via Vienna and Instanbul)........

Several pages back in this thread, we briefly discussed retired airliners that were converted into bars, restaurants, etc. (talk about RECYCLING!) Shocked

In the book, "CONVAIR: 880 & 990" (Jon Procter); there is a photo of an ex-AIR MALTA Convair at Lisbon, Portugal, which had been converted in to a bar/restaurant.

According to the aforementioned book, this plane was detained at Lisbon in 1980, after reportedly carrying arms bound for Karachi.

It departed empty for Santa Maria in the Azores on May 4th, but developed radio trouble and returned.

The Convair's captain took the malfunctioning equipment with him on a commercial flight back to the United States, but never returned.

After several attempts to resolve this issue, the Portuguese authorities declared the aircraft "abandoned" and sold the plane for $15,700.

When the new owner was not heard from, the Convair was auctioned, and the (next) new owner moved it to a location not far from the airport, where he converted it into a bar/restaurant.

After several successful years of operation, the establishment closed.

As of 1996, the retired airliner was still at that location, looking worn but still intact......

The following is also from the book mentioned in the previous post.......

In 1976, a CONVAIR, (renamed "Starship II") that had once flown for both JAL and CATHAY PACIFIC, received a new "executive" interior; as such, it flew for TRIPLE-D Corporation, carrying "JEFFERSON AIRPLANE" and other music groups worldwide.

The aircraft was purchased by LIGONAIR in 1981.

The plane was seized for non-payment of tie-down fees (at MacArthur Airport, Islip), and was bought at auction by pilot Chad Koppie, who planned to fly the craft to his farm in Illinois.

Following a brief legal battle, LIGONAIR re-acquired the plane, and sold it to the Ciskei government in South Africa.

When officials there refused to re-license the aircraft, it was bought by an individual, and had the plane transported to at Bonza Bay in East London.

At the time of the aforementioned book's publication (1996), the retired CONVAIR was still serving as Mr. Nels' private retreat, quite a long distance from its origin in San Diego........

"Why did the chicken(s) take roost in an old Constellation?" Confused

Back in 1976, a propeller blade suddenly broke loose in flight from an "F & B LIVESTOCK" Super Constellation over the Gulf of Honduras; slicing into #2 engine, the wayward prop severed vital hydraulic lines, resulting in a forced landing at Belize, with two wheels lowered.

Thankfully, there were no fatalities, and the aircraft itself escaped relatively unscathed.

The historic aircraft, however, was simply abandoned where it landed, and, for a number of years afterwards, was the most-talked about chicken coop in Belize........... Wink

In any of a number of Latin American countries, it was commonplace, for many years to see retired aircraft (passenger airliners and cargo-haulers) that had been stripped of parts, and were, basically, being used as glorified storage sheds for parts, tools, paint, and other equipment.

An example was a rare Consolidated C-87 Liberator, that, until 1972, flew (along with a sister aircraft) over the Bolivian mountains, carrying oil and meat.

In 1972, one airplane (CP-576) was removed from service, and sat at La Paz, now used as a repository for spare parts.

Eventually, this rare airplane made its way to the USA, for display at a USAF museum in California........
