Gentlemen:

Monorails, I believe, are one of the least-discussed modes of transportation today.

Mention "monorail" to most folks, and they will usually think of the Disney theme parks, and other such venues.

Older fellows (Your's truly included!), will, of course, recall the famed "AMF" monorail that glided about the 1964/1965 World's Fair in Queens, giving fair-goers a glimpse into what WAS supposed to be the future.

In Seattle, the monorail that was part of the 1962 World's Fair is still in use today, operating as part of the public transport in the city.

Japan, beginning in the late 1950's, began "getting on track" with monorail systems.

Throughout "modern" history, there have been many experimental monorails that have long since been forgotten.

IMHO, I believe they (and their present-day descendents) should not be forgotten.....

Though only an "experimental" operation, the first "elevated railway" came to Boston in the form of the steam-powered MEIGS "monorail" of the late 1880's.

Some wonderful historical views, here (imagine if such a system had been perfected and further expanded??)

The history of the Disneyland monorail system, which opened in 1959.

I still remember SCHUCO making sets of these sleek futuristic trains, back in the 1960's (these are VERY rare and pricey collectibles today.......that is..........IF you can even find one!)

*This is another good page with many interesting photos; note, too, the sharp-looking, little diesel-powered "tractor" used to tow disable monorail trains!

The famed "Hanging Railway" of Germany, in operation since 1901 (it is, indeed, worthy of note, that, in the fascinating 119 year history of the system, there has been only one fatal accident).......
