"Old Timers" in the bus business, or, for that matter, the railroad or airline business, are, sadly, becoming fewer and fewer as the years go by.
These days, an "Old Timer" would be someone who could recall driving a bus back in the 60's or 70's; when we were much younger, "Old Timers" would have referred to men "on the job" way back in the 30's and 40's!
Think of the "Old Timers" on the job back in the 1960's, who could still recall the days of "pullers" and "Super Coaches".........living history, indeed......

Just imagine if a "Hound" driver from the year 1960 was suddenly transported through time to the present, and he saw, firsthand, the current state of the Company........
Would he cry?
Would he mutter and cuss in disgust?
Would he curse those who helped bring about such a large-scale comedown?
Would he wish to be transported back to 1960 ASAP?
Probably all four of the above.......

He would probably be thankful that he lived his life in his era... |

Just for fun........
I've long enjoyed picturing SCENICRUISRS equipped with the following:
Canted, quad headlights (think of a '61 Chrysler!)
Accordian (transit-style) doors
"Old Look"-style rear windows
Illuminated "running dogs" on each side (SPECTACULAR at night!!!)
Skylights above the upper deck (picture a "scaled down" Vista-Dome car type arrangement, or, along the lines of the "GX-2")............

NYO--
Have you been eating too much pasta before bedtime?
Those are some pretty weird dreams...
Actually, the Scenicruiser did have skylights...one over the lower level, and three over the upper level...they doubled as emergency exits. |

traildriver:
As I am, these days, a die-hard, dedicated INSOMNIAC, I only WISH I could get a good night's sleep (heck, I'd even eat TWO bowls of pasta before bedtime!)
Of course, I knew about the small skylights on the SCENICRUISER; I was thinking of something more along the lines of a smaller version of a Vista-Dome car (recall the 1964 Oldsmobile station wagons, which had a similar arrangement over the tailgate area; a period ad shows a train with dome cars in the background)
Speaking of "weird transit dreams", I'd be here for at least an hour (or more) recounting some of REALLY strange transit-themed dreams I've had over the course of the past several decades, which included:
Two-car articulated "trains" made up of back-to-back PS Old Look suburbans, with PCC trucks and skirting (in this dream, Sidney Poitier, in full PSNJ uniform, was the "motorman"!)
Articulated IRT Lo-v's that had a streamlined Flex "Clipper"-style curve to the car ends where the articulated connection was (these were at TSQ, on the shuttle!)
"BARBERI"-type SI ferries zipping back in forth in the harbor at speedboat speed.
GRUMMANS with clerestory roofs.
Well, you get the picture, I'm sure.....
Oh, and while WIDE awake, I've long entertained the idea of a dedicated GREYHOUND busway/corridor, with the buses (SENICRUISRS/4104's) in trolley-bus mode, utilizing double ovehead........
No sense in wasting a VERY fertile (if overactive) imagination!

The problem with that, would be the elimination of the overhead package racks, which are needed on long distance coaches.
I recall the Motor Trend (or was it "Car Life"?) story on the Olds "Vista-Cruiser", and cousin, the Buick "Skylark" station wagons...
The article headline shouted: "Son of Scenicruiser!"...

NYO--
You are very welcome...I'm glad you enjoyed that.
Since the Toronado has a front wheel driveline, they could have stretched it even longer. It did not have the long driveshaft limitation of the competing Checker Aerobus.

traildriver:
Your posting (thanks again!) also reminded me of the old Checker "MARATHON" stretch airport cars; many, many years ago, I can recall seeing them at Newark Airport (both the old facility and the present)
I have not thought about one of these in ages; remember, too, back in the 30's and 40's, PREVOST built a number of "stretch" buses that had originally started out as sedans or station wagons.
In 1948, PREVOST "stretched" a Dodge utility vehicle for a small Quebec operator; this vehicle could now carry 15 passengers.........

Speaking of "stretched" vehicles.............
TRAILWAYS, as we know, operated articulated EAGLES for some years, before selling them off (these buses initially ran on the Denver-Colorado Springs-Pueblo route)
It's quite interesting to ponder what an articulated SCENICRUIER might have been like, had any ever been built....
Recall, too, the (1946) KAISER artic, operated by SANTA FE TRAILWAYS, and later, CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS........

Plus Chevy had a stretched version of the suburban. Conn. Limo has a bunch of them and Lials had some also. |

The “coach builder’s” like Stageway, made all sorts of “stretches” from Pontiacs, Chrysler, Lincoln, Cadillac, and others into limo’s, 6 or 8 door wagons and sedans, hearses, ambulances, etc... |
