Appreciate this info; yes, I've heard that GREYHOUND has greatly cut back services in Canada.....sad, when you think of the amount of service the company provided, several decades ago.
In Robert Gabrick's "GOING THE GREYHOUND WAY". one chapter: "1940-1945; THE ROADS OF WAR AND VICTORY" covers GREYHOUND's role during WW2, with many old advertisements, photos, and historical information.
GREYHOUND had well over 5,000 employees serving in the armed forces, and the ads of that day emphasized the company's important role in the War effort.
One ad depicts a GREYHOUND driver behind the wheel of an armored army vehicle, and also shows him as a GREYHOUND driver.
The driver tells us:
"I drove a Greyhound.....and I will again!"
Another ad (obviously another full-page magazine ad), depicts a fellow alongside the Alcan Highway, waving at a passing SILVERSIDES.
Over the windows, it reads:
"NORTHWEST SERVICE COMMAND U.S.A."
"ROLL 'ER THROUGH TO FAIRBANKS!", the fellow waving to the driver calls out.
The ad starts out with:
"......No, you can't ride a GREYHOUND Super Coach to Alaska over the Alcan Highway.....not today!"
"........but, just the same, these familiar blue and white buses are rolling along that highway, doing an important job for Uncle Sam, along the most amazing military road in all history....."
".......after Victory comes, who can doubt that roads and buses will work together to develop the wonderland of Western Canada and Alaska......" |

While we are still "North Of The Border", mention should be made of the legendary Canadian bus builder, PREVOST.
I never saw a PREVOST until my family's first trip up to Canada in 1966; on our trip back in 1973, I really took notice of these buses, both older models and newer ones.
SOMERSET, in the late 1960's, became the first American company to purchase a PREVOST coach (these were the "CHAMPIONS", used in commuter service to the PABT)......

That is a poorly written wiki article...some errors in it, and not really a complete
accounting.... |

Though I certainly do not have the vast storehouse of bus-related knowledge as you do within my own graying cranium, I also thought that the article could have been written much better; it seemed to be, more or less, a haphazard "rush job".
I've read much more accurate and more well-written wiki articles than this one, myself.....

Speaking of "Up North".......
I came across two "VERMONT TRANSIT timetables (1981/1998) in my archives; the map on the back of the 1998 TT shows an extensive network radiating out of New York, serving many cities and other on-line communities.
Thru coaches were (as noted in the TT) operated by VERMONT TRANSIT and GREYHOUND.
Connections listed:
GREYHOUND
PEOPLE'S BUS LINES, INC.
VOYAGEUR, INC.
BONANZA BUS LINES, INC.
PETER PAN
In both TT's, it is amazing to see that, much like the GREYHOUND and TRAILWAYS of earlier days, VT was still calling at any of a large number of "mom and pop" establishments, including gas stations and restaurants.
There is also a table showing thru bus designations (20 in all)
Interestingly, the VAN HOOL shown on the front of the 1998 TT does not look at that dated today!
Amazing how so much has changed in the years since these TT's were issued.....

(VT [according to this article] is also now a "Fallen Flag", its routes going into GREYHOUND in 2008, after it had become a GREYHOUND subsidiary) |

From: "TRAILWAYS BUSES" (William A. Luke, 2000)
".......ADIRONDACK also owns two other TRAILWAYS companies, PINE HILL TRAILWAYS, and NEW YORK TRAILWAYS. ADIRONDACK became a NATIONAL TRAILWAYS BUS SYSTEM member in 1940......."
"......since 1995, ADIRONDACK has added 18 PREVOST motorcoaches to its fleet, four of which are lift-equipped......."

Just to clarify a bit...
Adirondack Transit Lines dba Adirondack Trailways, and Pine Hill - Kingston Bus Co., dba Pine Hill Trailways, are owned by the same family. Passenger Bus Corporation, dba New York Trailways, is only owned by one of those family members...the brother and sister inherited the first two from their parents, the brother started NYT on his own, from what remained of the old Western New York Motor Lines, dba Empire Trailways much later on. But in operation, all three are run seemingly as one entity, under Trailways of New York...the three have separate driver's and seniortiy. The first two are under the United Transportation Union, and the last under the Teamster's... |
