A few interesting bits from: Grady Hall Morgan's "MEMOIRS OF A GREYHOUND BUS DRIVER"............
".......the training program would take six weeks to make us bus drivers. We had class work one day, and would go out driving the next day. The classroom work consisted of learning to handle tickets, and also making out our daily reports......"
"........we also learned how to keep a daily log of our time while we were on and off duty, driving or not, everything had to be logged for the twenty-four hour period each day......."
"........on the days we students drove, there would be five trainees on each bus. One trainee would drive the bus from the San Francisco depot and we would go to Fresno, our southernmost division point. We would pull through all the Greyhound depots on the way, and there would be driver changes quite often........"

Further:
".......we trainees had been on this job for about a month, and were beginning to feel like we were old timers, handling the buses. We took a different model bus out each day, so that we would become familiar with all of the buses in our fleet......."
".......now that were were comfortable with driving the buses and handling paperwork, we were all given an itinerary so that we could actually operate a regular schedule under supervision, with real passengers..............."

From "HOUNDS OF THE ROAD" (Carlton Jackson)............
"..........Greyhound's bankruptcy ended in October, 1991, 16 months after it began. During that time, the bus line grew considerably........."
"........the company's debt was re-financed, and it accelerated Greyhound de Mexico (founded in the 1960s) to cash in on the growing Hispanic market in Southern California; a new computer system was installed for reservations and schedules (replacing the old 'Russell's Guide', though re-instating it later for schedules)........"

And THAT'S an UNDERSTATEMENT!
Too bad they do not have at least one ACF-BRILL C-44 suburban; but, then again, BRILLS were not at all that common on the West Coast, as they were on the East Coast.
GREYHOUND, TRAILWAYS, and many other companies operated ACF-BRILL IC-41s through the 1950s; some companies used them into the 1960s.
Several New Jersey companies were still rostering the big, tough C-44s when I was growing up.....man, I can STILL hear that deep bass growl today!

Too bad that more historic GREYHOUND depots could not have been as fortunate to also have such a wonderful "happy ending"!

Great find! Love those hi resolution interior photos!
I noticed one error in the text...the author said they applied highly polished stainless steel to the exterior for that sleek look, but unlike the Zephyr depicted, it was polished aluminum, not stainless steel.
I love the Greyhound Lines and logo stamped into the dashboard. I vividly recall those from when I rode those coaches. |

You are welcome....glad you enjoyed the pics and article!
It made me think of the part in Jim Lehrer's "A BUS OF MY OWN", where he describes "fiddling" with the gearshift on his just-bought 1946 "Clipper", having no idea which gear position was which.....an INTERESTING "maiden run" for sure!
I truly have great respect for those individuals who purchase vintage buses and spend great sums of money (and, also, years) bringing them back to their former glory.....indeed, a labor of love!
