More on LIRR's parlor car fleet of years gone by.......
The LIRR purchased from the E-L the two famed tavern-lounge observation cars that once trailed the legendary "PHOEBE SNOW" (last run 1966)
These well-known cars went on to serve well-heeled LIRR commuters for some years, before going on to yet another "adventure", this time as inspection cars for Metro-North.........

Train time at Joliet, 1972, early in the AMTRAK era.
On the right, note the "old school" porter standing straight and tall, ready to assist anyone who might need his services....his stance alone tells one that he obviously he was proud of both HIMSELF and his occupation......

Here's an interesting early 1970's photo taken at Metropark (NEC)
Note the "NORTHERN PACIFIC" sleeper (w/ CB&Q markings)
This was back in the early days of AMTRAK when a truly diverse (and quite interesting!) fleet of "heritage" cars was being operated.......

In those early years, there was a big gap in the type of equipment and service offered in different parts of the country. Generally speaking, those in the west and south enjoyed better than the midwest and east. One of Amtrak's first objectives, was to sort of "homogenize" the fleet, and bring better equipment and service to those parts of the country that had been lacking in the years leading up to Amtrak. Hence, some nice western cars were sent east. |

Recall, also, the "western" cars that were sent east to the E-L and the CNJ, in the late 1960's and 1970's.
In the late 1960's, the E-L was operating a number of streamlined second-hand SANTA FE coaches on some of the diesel commuter runs; they were about 30 years old themselves at the time, but, were far more modern (and also, had a/c) than the ancient "Boonton" and "Stillwell" coaches then in use.
In the 1970's, a number of BN/GN/KCS/MONON through coaches went east to the CNJ; their distinctive color schemes caused trains to be made up with these colorful cars to be dubbed "Jersey Builders", by railfans of that era.
Early in the 70's, the CNJ also aquired an ex-FEC observation car, for use on certain NY&LB (North Jersey Coast) trains.
Though these second hand cars (with new, commuter-style seating) were air-conditioned, they still had drawbacks.
Unlike the old CNJ heavyweights, the second-hand through cars had only one vestibule door per side, which, of course, increased dwell times at stations.
The old heavyweights, on the other hand, of course, had two vestibule doors per side, and, therefore, in this sense, were superior to the "new" equipment.......

More second-hand through equipment on the CNJ (ConRail, 1978), near Newark's Penn Station; note "scrubbed out" lettering on the nearest car's letterboard.......

I took my first ride to Bay Head Jct., on one of those ex-BN cars when they were first put into service. I recall them not yet being re-equipped with commuter seating, so we had a real luxurious ride, in those deep reclining seats. |

Lucky fellow, indeed!
The "Jersey Builder" CNJ cars were refurbished at the CNJ's Elizabethport shops; that was where they old "through" seats were removed and replaced with "commuter-style" seating for increased capacity.
About 1974, the CNJ re-equipped its seasonal "RACE TRAIN" (to Monmouth Park) with the second-hand, air-conditioned cars.
Since the CNJ cab cars were not air-conditioned, a GP-7 was positioned at each end (this train's descendent, NJT's "Pony Express", was discontinued a number of years back); back in the day, both the CNJ and the PRR provided direct service to Monmouth Park's grandstand area.
When the "Jersey Builder" cars first entered service on the CNJ, they still wore their original insignias; soon enough, though, the cars were sporting CNJ's famous "Liberty" herald (by this late date, the nearest the CNJ got to the Statue of Liberty was Bayonne!)
When the ex-SANTA FE coaches were delivered to the E-L, the cars had their seating revamped at Meadville; these cars did not serve long on the E-L, however, as, by 1971, the new push-pulls were in service, and the Port Jervis trains (until 1974) were still using E-8's and Stillwell coaches.
Today, in 2020, even the original 1971 E-L/NJDOT push-pulls (Pullman-Standard) are but memories, along with their snorting, barking, smoking, chortling, hulking "U-Boats" ("Mastadonus Locomotivus")

E. Palestine, Ohio, 1977.
Steam-heated "Heritage" cars (talk about second hand equipment!) indeed date this vintage wintertime scene......
