I have an old, battle-scarred issue (1980's) of "BUS WORLD" (the covers are long since gone) that featured an excellent photo article by Ed Stauss. "RAILROAD BUSES".

There are a number of excellent vintage and modern (for that time) photos of the buses that were owned/operated by the various railroads here.

Some of the railroads that once operated buses:

UNION PACIFIC

SANTA FE

BALTIMORE & ANNAPOLIS

CANADIAN NATIONAL

CHICAGO, AURORA, & ELGIN

BANGOR & AROOSTOCK

At the time that this issue of "BUS WORLD" hit the stands, AMTRAK was "making increasing use of buses as feeders to their rail network"........

Quick note on the PSNJ buses that were used by the N&S&W in their "SUSQUEHANNA TRANSFER" train-connection service:

The first buses used in this service (which began in 1939) were 1936 YELLOW Model 734's, and were painted in the same maroon and cream color used by the NYS&W trains ( I have also seen photos of older, front-engined PS buses used in this service)

Various models were used over the years (as mentioned earlier here); this service ended in 1966, when the NYS&W ended all commuter service.......

This is one of the sleek ACF-built streamlined rail cars built for the NYS&W for "SUSQUEHANNA TRANSFER" service; these cars lasted in service until after the War, when they were placed by new RDC cars.

In the right background, you can see the helix for the Lincoln Tunnel; this photo was snapped just beyond the Transfer's platform, where commuters transferred from Susquehanna trains to the buses that would take them into New York, via the Lincoln Tunnel.......

Wouldn't it have been neat, if the original upper level of ther PABT had included a rail platform or loop, similar to the original San Francisco Trans Bay Terminal, and rail tracks in the Lincoln Tunnel tubes, to allow those "Motorailer's" to share the tunnel with vehicles, and run right into the Port? traildriver:

...I guess it IS true, after all, that "great minds think alike".....for many years, I've also imagined what the PABT might have been like, had there had been a rail loop on the upper level, for NYS&W "MotorRailers", entering the city via the Lincoln Tunnel! (dang!)

I DO recall a number of years ago hearing of some proposal of having a light rail line running through the Lincoln Tunnel; when one considers it, the HBLR is just a stone's throw away, such an idea does not sound all that far-fetched, even though odds are NOT in favor of anything like that ever seeing the light of day.

As far as the now-gone TransBay terminal, recall, when it opened in 1939, you had the red IER trains (formerly SP0, KEY trains, and SN trains.

By the early 40's, only the KEY remained; had some semblence of the KEY survived into recent times, the Transbay Terminal indeed would have been a "multi-modal" facility! Wink

Interesting sidenote on the NYS&W ACF railcars; they only operated between the "TRANSFER" and Butler (except on fantrips) and did not operate into the ERIE's Pavonia Avenue terminal in Jersey City.

Ahhhh, what once WAS, and what MIGHT have been.........

Transbay Terminal.......

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Transbay_Terminal

Interesting to learn that the trains, once in the terminal, were controlled by a "custom electric switchboard", instead of the usual mechanical interlockings of that era!

Too bad this historic facility, like the electric trains themselves, is no more........ Sad

Several decades separate these views of departures at the old Transbay Terminal in San Francisco......

The concept of BART trains rolling over the Golden Gate Bridge is not quite as far-fetched as you might first believe.......(!!) Shocked

Marin County commuters truly "got the wrong end of the stick" when initial plans to have the future BART network extended to into Marin hit a dead end.

Recall, Marin had been without electric (or, for that mater, any) commuter rail service since the old NWP shut down electric train and ferryboat operations in 1941.

The only public transit option that Marin commuters had then were the GREYHOUND commuter buses, running into San Francisco, via the bridge.

Too, had the "KEY" trains held on at least until the 1960's, there might have been a chance that this system might have been absorbed into the then-abuilding BART network.......

Had original plans been followed, imagine IND 8th Avenue trains rumbling across the lower deck of the George Washington Bridge, back in the 1930's?

The lower deck of the GWB, of course, was built many years later (vehicles only), but, by that late date, there was no thought of running subway trains across the span.

Had the IND been extended over the Bridge, a new multi-model transfer facility would have been built in Fort Lee.....sure would have been a lot more interesting than non-stop packs of jitney vans........ Rolling Eyes

There also had been talk of getting the SIRT over the new VZ Bridge, but, a certain Mr. Moses would have given up the ghost before he let such an ifernal thing happen! Shocked

Remember, there WAS to be new tunnels built under the Narrows to carry SIRT trains into Brooklyn (1920's), where they would have connected with the BMT's 4th Avenue line, allowing Staten island commuters a one-seat ride into Manhattan (to this day, bellmouths for these new tubes to Staten Island still exist today, near the 59th St. station in Brooklyn.......

And, to think......only a decade before BART construction began operating, trains of the "KEY SYSTEM" were still crossing the Bay Bridge into San Francisco, but, would soon be foolishly junked.

An interesting fact on BART's "Transbay Tube"; it almost exactly follows the route of the old SP Ferry Building-Oakland Pier ferry route, which shut down in 1958.

Suddenly, electric rapid transit was once again in vogue, but too late to save the "KEY".......

Also of interest.......

(imagine if some form of rapid transit ran across the spans!)
