In this 1981 photo, the "RIVER ROAD EXPRESS" sign seen displayed here tells us that #263 is a repainted former ORANGE & BLACK bus......

In this 2010 photo, we see a NJT NABI pulling out of the Journal Square Transportation Center, signed:
"80 GATES AVE. VIA JOURNAL SQUARE"
The old brick building just glimpsed on the left was once owned by PS, and was adjacent to their Sip Avenue terminal.....

Journal Square as it was, early 1970's.
Here's "DOWNTOWN BUS COMPANY's" #437, signed:
"6 LOWER JERSEY CITY".........

Earlier, here, I had briefly mentioned the illustrious Mayor of Jersey City, many decades ago, Frank Hague.
I found the following interesting bit in the book "ON THE IRISH WATERFRONT", by James T. Fisher:
".....in 1929, the driver of a (Jersey City) city bus 'deliberately backed right through' the entrance of an 'anti-Hague local club headquarters......."
This took place not longer after the new multi-lane Hudson Boulevard bridge, spanning the H&M/PRR tracks was completed.......

Note here, in this article, that, the Daily News described the Journal Square of the 1920's through the 1960's as Jersey City's "crown jewel", regarding its busy transportation facilities, theatres, and many shops and other business establishments.
Note, too, that a popular 1940's tune, "Jersey Bounce" mentioned Journal Square.
This article also correctly states that the opening of the new PATH transportation center in 1974 was largely responsible for the decline and decay of Journal Square, by removing the buses from the Square itself.........

I heartily recommend a book by Thomas Fleming, "Mysteries of My Father" for its insight into Frank Hague and the political apparatus of Jersey City. No, the book has no descriptions of bus routes or the bus organizations, but it gives a vivid look at the period of Fleming's life, 1927-2017, his parents' backgrounds, and Frank Hague, 1876-1956. I have read it twice, the second time to learn more about parishes and neighborhoods. Fleming's Dad was on Hague's team and feared him. |

Joe:
Thanks!
I'll have to grab a copy off of eBay one of these days!
Of course, no one would associate Hague with Jersey City buses (or, for that matter, the H&M), so it is a bit ironic that he lived in a penthouse at 2600 Hudson Boulevard, where a steady parade of lowly "Boulevard" buses rumbled by at all hours.......

Joe:
I have a 1963 "EASTERN GREYHOUND" timetable that dates back to the days when "The Hound" also called at Journal Square.
However, "Jersey City", and not "Journal Square", is used here......

Still sporting its original PSNJ insignias, #R-321 waits to swing into its designated loading spot inside the old Sip Avenue terminal; note that "GREYHOUND" still called at the Square, back in 1973.......

Though the buses were all operated by "HUDSON BUS", the buses that ran on the northern and southern arms of Hudson Boulevard wore different paint schemes, with some variations.
The SHBL buses were basically gray and white.
NHBL buses, on the other hand, were a more elaborate (yet sedate) gray, red, and silver.
All NHBL and SHBL buses had "HUDSON COUNTY BOULEVARD" emblazoned on the sides; here again, there were variations.
On some NHBL buses, these letters were in gold along the red stripe beneath the windows; on other (older) buses, "HUDSON COUNTY BOULEVARD" was in BLACK letters, above the stripe beneath the windows.
Going way back, I can remember a few of the the MACKS and oldest of the Old Looks having "HUDSON COUNTY BOULEVARD" written in gold script beneath the windows........
