News item (10/30/20):

.......just caught the tail end of a brief report on 1010 WINS that, by December, some cruise ships are going to be allowed to operate in American waters.

Though this is, of course, a rare snippet of upbeat news, it will be quite interesting to see how this all plays out.

The problem is...I don't know of any ports of call, that are allowing US based cruise ships to enter. Until they do, there still won't be any cruises, not even so-called "Cruises to nowhere", that were banned by foreign flagged cruise ships (which almost all are), a few years ago.

The only large US flagged cruise ship is NCL's, "Pride of America", homeported in Honolulu. That ship could legally resume cruising, so long as the Hawaiian ports permit it to...
So could the US river boats....

Good points.

As you and I both know, there is simply no easy solution to bringing back (safely) cruise line operations; one can only imagine the plethora of hurdles that have to be met (and overcome) before operations even remotely associated with "normal" can again resume.

I'm sure hoping that you will be able to go on your 2021 cruise! Wink

One looks at a SINGLE cruise ship, and marvels at its massive size, and then, also contemplates the massive amount of manpower required to operate just this ONE vessel.

Multiply that number by the number of now-OOS cruise ships, and we are talking at a task that is light-years beyond monumental, regarding any sort of service resumption.

Any particular "fave" ships? Wink

Hard to believe that we can now look upon 1995 with "nostalgia", for so many reasons.......

"MS FORMOSA QUEEN"; indeed a once-palatial "ship of many names", one of the first ships purpose-built for use in the cruise trade.

Sadly, this most impressive ship was retired and scrapped some years back. Sad

It would, indeed, seem as though these monolithic vessels are a vacation destination onto themselves; it never ceases to amaze me at just how huge these vessels are (recall, we didn't think liners could get any larger than the "QUEENS" of yore; the "UNITED STATES" seemed BEYOND immense! Shocked

One of things that has long fascinated me is how, when the era of "classic" transatlantic liner was drawing to a close, the cruise ship industry began......and, IMHO, I don't think that anyone at the time ever realized just how massive and popular a business it was to become......let's all hope for, at the very least,at least a partial recovery, in 2021....... Wink

Years ago, I can remember seeing various Navy craft docked there (some of these were mothballed)

In 1976, the graving dock was leased to the now-defunct Bethlehem Steel Shipyards in Hoboken.

Interestingly, in 1978, at this dock, luxurious penthouses were installed aboard the "QE2".

Later, this dock was used by Braswell Shipyards, Bethlehem's successor in New York Harbor......
