......during the massive water main break in upper Manhattan, that cut service on the IRT 7th Avenue (#'s 1,2,3) trains earlier in the week, news footage (Eyewitness News, 7) showed massive crowds trying to crowd onto trains on other lines (CHAOS!)

The reporter made this comment: ".....straphangers were trying in vain to grab onto a strap on any train but were not having any luck....."

Duh, the last cars to still have straps were the IRT's famed Redbirds, now gone some 17-odd years now......... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I think the reporter was just using that phrase generically...could be just grabbing the pole...

Though most "old school" subway equipment were furnished with tradional standee staps, some units utilized stanchions and overhead poles.

The BMT Multi-Section cars did not use straps, dor did the "D" type "Triplex" units.

While some "AB" Standards had straps, others did not.

On the els, the BMT "C" units also lacked straps.

Postwar, the R-12 through R-15 cars were the first IRT cars not to use straps; in later years, however, small grab handles were installed in these cars.

The R-44's were the first of the "new generation" cars not to be equipped with straps.........
