Is it my imagination, or did GM's New Looks have a longer run in NYC than Flx' equivalent?

W.B.:

While I can't put this in concrete, I believe you are correct in your assumption.

While I can well remember seeing GM Fishbowls as late as 1996 or 1997, I know I cannot remember seeing any Flexies then; IMHO, they had already been gone for some time....exactly when, I cannot say.....

*How many GRUMMANS ran on MaBSTOA routes?

What depot(s) were they assigned to?

We can see from those pics that Grummans certainly had a presence at 132nd Street (M4), Amsterdam (M100) and 54th Street (M17, M32) depots. Likely Coliseum or whichever depot/garage Bx1 was assigned out of. Another thread had a printout of which depots (both 'Tee-Yay' and MaBSToA) would have had which Grummans, PA- or non PA-.

B.T.W., on pic #3253, the batwing claiming #700 would most likely be #8700.

W.B.:

Thanks for providing this info....much appreciated, as always.

I can remember "PA" prefixes here in New Jersey on some buses, long ago.

I'm wondering now if any of these buses were ex-MTA units? (I know ACADEMY operated several ex-MTA RTS's back in the 90's, early 2000's, which I rode a number of times on the "#22 HILLSIDE", before NJT decided to cut back the line to Nungessers, about 2005)......

"HUDSON BUS" Grumman PA1219, 1982.

I remember riding this bus a number of times when it was running on the old NHBL #1 line between Journal Square and Nungessers, well over 20 years ago.

Another GRUMMAN on this line (B-118) was another bus I rode many times on my homebound commutes, up until about 1998.

A very good friend of mine (who was a dead-ringer for Desi Arnaz!) drove this bus for ages, before he quite the bus business and (last I heard) went into real estate........

Regarding NYCTA/MaBSTOA photos at bus.nycsubway.org.........

IMHO, the "galleries" of old bus photos could be broken down as follows:

GMC New Looks, hands down, represent the vast majority of NYCTA/MaBSTOA photos on this site.

Flex New Looks come in at second place.

Old Looks/RTS more or less tie for third.

GRUMMANS and MACKS are clearly in fourth place, photo-wise.

From my observations, through my many hours of research for the topics we discuss here, the GM New Look, without a doubt, is the bus that is represented the most, photo-wise.

Photo-wise, it would seem that (for whatever reason) Flex New Looks (with few exceptions)were not "chased down" by bus photographers of that era, as much as their GMC counterparts were, judging by the sheer number of photos here.

IMHO, the non-GM New Look buses, without a doubt, more than deserve "equal time", so to speak; ditto the GRUMMAN and RTS.

I've always loved the GM New Looks, but, then again, I'd like to see the other buses of that era (and prior) more equally represented, picture-wise.

Just my 2 1/2 cents worth, here......

The photo of #100 was a Grumman publicity photo used in many of their advertising projects.

That's what I was thinking; it looked like a "posed" publicity photo to me.

Sadly, most "publicity" photos of these buses were of the negative sort, when the fleet began catching fire and, literally, "cracking up".

When the WAMATA buses trekked north to fill in for the sidelined GRUMMAN fleet, the media was indeed covering it all, including showing stored "decade-and-a-half-old-clunkers" (this was a Channel 5 WNEW reporter commenting) pulling out of a garage.

Outside of, say, some bus fans, I doubt that the GRUMMAN is, even today, fondly recalled.......

Flatbush & Nostrand; note the old-fashioned "across-the-street" Christmas lights, once commonplace in many cities and towns (my hometown of Union City included, back in the 60's!)

*Also, note the huge "WINSTON LIGHTS" billboard, indeed a sign of the times.....

First-generation #2050, Park Row & Beekman.

The discount record store seen across the street (check out the sign for records and tapes!) dates this photo as much as the bus itself does.........
