The first of those pics, the same black-print-on-yellow-background as Manhattan street signs, this was from the 1969-70 set - there were some street names in Staten Island shared with Manhattan, to the point where there would have been 2x signs prepared for installation in each borough.
There's another set of variants that, if one sees the proper historical background and context from old photos, they can make out when they were first produced. (Besides another element of NYC life that, like the Old and New Looks and RTS's, have all but disappeared.)

W.B.:
A good point.
Though our photos, of course, focus on the buses themselves, the street signs (when visible) also "date" a photo; slowly but surely, the street signs change, and, in the blink of an eye, the familiar signs we knew for years have vanished.
Likewise, who ever thought that the iconic "DON'T WALK" signs would one day vanish, to be replaced by today's mundane "picto symbol" versions.
Too, such once-commonplace street hardware, such as two-light traffic signals, also serve to date vintage bus photos (I wonder if any such signals were still in use in the early GRUMMAN/RTS era?)
The bus photos, also, show the many changes to neighborhoods over the years; sadly, not all changes were for the better.
And then, there are some areas that, aside from the vehicles, clothing styles, and storefront signage, hardly seem to change at all.........

*Also, you can just glimpse one of the 1960's-era Fishbowl "BUS STOP" signs on the left; WOOLWORTHS, of course, was still as common as cracks in the sidewalk.......

The 'DONT WALK' in this case was the Marbelite 'Lawdescent Lite' LPS-20 model. First appeared around 1965 or '66, the last would have been installed in 1975 or so. 'W 49 ST' seems to date to c.1968. This was a few months before the area between FDR Drive and Eighth Avenue E -> W and 34th and 59th Streets S -> N had all their street signs replaced with the first-generation off-white print on green background with the Statue of Liberty on the far left on both sides.
As for the white on that Fishbowl, looks like by the layout pattern it was a replacement for the lighter blue . . .

Avenue J. & E. 16th, 1980.
Note "DON'T WALK" and street sign; #8856 is displaying a batwing ad for the long-defunct "JFK EXPRESS". (recall the commercial with the jingle: "Take The Train To The Plane"? (actually, it was more like "take the TRAIN to the BUS to the PLANE!)

Those color coded street sign's by borough were a neat feature along the Brooklyn/Queens border...made it easier to tell which borough you were in, as there were usually no other indications, other than the change in house numbering, or in the case of crossing the Newtown Creek.

Something to ponder...
I wonder if the Flxibles in the 7500-7659 series (NYCTA) and 7700-7937 series (MaBSTOA) were meant to have batwings.
Note the lack of standee windows and no side destination sign box ahead of the rear door.
Remember, #7753 was the one and only batwing Flxible.

Long time no see.....good to have you back amongst us!
Back in the early 80's, a close buddy of mine from work then lived in Woodside; though I cannot remember what street this might have been on (this was about 1982!) I recall that, while walking to the elevated Flushing line IRT station one time, seeing a street sign that clearly had been around for ages and was pretty well rusted and neglected, and handing by a bolt or two, at a limp angle over the sidewalk.
It was so rusted that I cannot remember what color it was supposed to have been originally, but I knew it was QUITE old, and obviously left in place for much longer than it was supposed to.
This was way back when some of the Flushing line cars still wore their old '64 "World's Fair" colors, but defaced by spray paint scrawlings
At that time, I remember the Woodside station still having ancient wooden escalators and its original change booth, and still a lot of incandescent lighting.
Man, it's all so long ago now.....

MaBSTOA 15:
GREAT PHOTOS!! (as always!!)
Your comment got me to thinking.
Often, over the years, I've wondered why certain NYCTA/MTA buses had batwings, while others did not.
Certainly, it would seem that buses with batwings could bring in more ad revenue than those buses not equipped with them.
I've also been curious as to the florescent tubes that illuminated the batwing ads; were these tubes custom-made for buses equipped with batwings, or were they "industrial-use-off-the-shelf"?
Later in the 60's and 70's, I clearly remember a number of PSNJ/TNJ Fishbowls having batwings....they always made for a cool "light show" at night!

"Joisey" Old Look #M-779 (on a charter) looks a bit "conservative" next to flashy batwing-equipped MTA Fishbowl #8656, at 5th & 32nd........
