MABSTOA #8557 at Lexington & 34th St., 1969 (also, a memorable year, indeed for the Amazin' New York Mets!) Very Happy

Note the ad placards heralding the new "EXACT FARE" policy for the buses; the bus still carries its original (and smart!) "OA" insignia.....

MABSTOA #8571 (still sporting the old "TEE-YAY" green), at Broadway & 23rd St., 1974. *

http://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?1182

(courtesy: bus.nycsubway.org)

*This photo is interesting; while the front roller sign displays a reading for the "#M32", the sign over the reader door is set for the #15".

Until the mid-late 1940's, W. 23rd St. was a busy transfer point between streetcars (and later, buses) and the trans-Hudson ferries of several New Jersey railroads (ERIE/DL&W/CNJ); the "ELECTRIC FERRY" to Weehawken also docked here, until it was shut down in 1943)

The massive, clock-towered "UNION FERRY TERMINAL" (closely resembling the present 1907 Lackawanna terminal at Hoboken) was a hubbub of activity for many years.

By the early 1940's, the CNJ and the ERIE discontinued ferry service to W. 23rd St. from their respective Jersey City, leaving only the ferries of the DL&W; these boats continued to run until the service was abandoned, in late 1946.

Note a trace of this massive, monolithic terminal remains today........

The sidewalk where the bus is parked is on Fifth Avenue short of 23rd Street. That was the terminal, since 1925, for the route 15/M32/MQ32/Q32, Jackson Heights line until it was changed to West 32nd Street & 7th Avenue.

Thanks for the historical data....always greatly appreciated! Wink

23rd St. had always been a busy transit thoroughfare; trans-Hudson ferries (until 1946), streetcars, several subway stations (including the H&M/PATH), and back in the day, El stations.

And, last, but certainly not least, buses.......

Here we see #8570 awaiting the next #M16 run.

Lost New York, certainly........

Notice on 8570, the different 16 front sign from the '64 5300's; namely, a wider type font and '1 AVE'.

The front roll signs with small 'M' and bigger '32' would have been produced in April 1974, three months before what at this point was QM15 was to be rechristened M32. Unfortunately, the only 'updated' side signs for batwings I could see, were indicated with 'M16 Water-/side' and 'M41 Culture/Loop'. (Front slashes indicate the other part on a second line below the first.) The '15 Fifth Ave/Jackson Hts' would have dated to the 1966-67 group of batwing side signs from when OA 8301-8780 were built by GM.

W.B:

Appreciate the info; I am not at all surprised to see that you had pertinent historical information to post here! Very Happy

Through your many, many highly-informative responses (regarding roll signs past) here, it truly can be said that many vintage bus photos are indeed "worth a thousand words"...... Wink

12th Ave. & 42nd, 1981.

Recalling the days when WAMATA buses "pinch hit" for the MTA's ailing GRUMMAN fleet.......

34th St. & 1st Avenue, 1973.

Here we see #8002 "on the job", holding down an "#M15" run.

As can be seen here, the era when many drivers were no longer wearing ties.

As is obvious from this photo, autos were QUITE large AND distinctive, back then.......(!!)

Chatham Sq. & Mott St., 1972 (two Fishbowls on different routes for the price of one in this nostalgic view!)..........

Chatham Square in an earlier view; this scene (judging by the vehicles seen here) looks to have been taken not long before the venerable 3rd Avenue El was abandoned in Manhattan (1955)

Look closely on the extreme left; a bus can just be seen, in the shadows of the El structure.....

It looks like 8002 was a "loan" from the Fresh Pond ('FP') depot (as of 1/1/73), as what was generally based at the 126th Street ('MAN') depot was numbered in the 8123-8202 range. Someone once noted that one of the 5000's / 5100's (Flxible) was running on the M15; sounds like that too was "on loan" to MAN.

The bus running the M15 route was part of the 1960 'Tee-Yay' order, albeit a different numerical sequence than was first assigned to Manhattan TA depots in 1960-61.

W.B:

The subject of "loaner" buses, in itself, is an interesting topic.

I always find it interesting to read about buses being "shuffled" from one depot to another, over the course of their service years.

This also had to be interesting when buses were sent to another depot, and, lo and behold, they were not equipped with the appropriate roller curtain readings.

Again, greatly appreciate your always interesting and informative input....... Wink
