The first pic had an original 1964 front roll sign; I wouldn't be surprised if the side sign was also 1964 (indicating "106 42 St Xtown"). |

Pic #1025 also showed an original 1964 front rollsign on bus #5321 (from the '64-'65 order). |

Earlier last evening, I was thinking of the buses (and streetcars) that have plied the busy 42nd route for many a decade; in particular, I was thinking of the bus services along that famed "naughty, gaudy, bawdy, sporty" thoroughfare, Forty-Second Street.
Until 1959, the NYCRR's West Shore ferry operated from the foot of W. 42nd to Weehawken; until the 1970's, the famed Hudson River Day Line also docked in the vicinity (Pier #81, phone BRyant 9-5151!)
There was also, of course, the legendary Circle Line (happily, still with us today!)
And, back in the days of the graceful, monolithic, trans-Atlantic liners, their piers were within walking distance of the bus routes that terminated at 12th & W. 42nd St.
Am also wondering if bus service along W. 42nd St. was busier back in the days when the Hudson River pier area was still thriving..........

It would seem so . . . as late as the 1970's there was the M106, M16's "West 42nd Street" branch (as opposed to their 12th Avenue branch), M-3 (later M27, now M50) . . . only M42 and M50 terminate there today (unless M50's western terminus has since been truncated after the 2010 budget cutbacks that also saw the end of what was left of the old M27).
As to 125th Street, its decline as an "active" pier was symbolized in 1954 when STS' M-105 Tenth Avenue line's northern terminus was truncated from there to 73rd Street and Broadway. |

Haven't seen you around these parts for awhile.... sure glad to see you "back in action"; you can, most certainly, always be counted on to provide some (VERY) interesting information and trivia regarding roller curtain readings, fonts, etc......sure adds a lot of "depth" to any given topic......

Also, remember that not only was (and still is) 125th St. a busy destination, in regards to the subways, but, also, the 125th St. station of the NYCRR and NH (today's Metro-North)
And, of course, the stations of the "els".
Also, back in the "swing" era (1930's/1940's), 125th St. (and the general area) was quite hot with jazz/night clubs, etc.
Several blocks to the north of 125th, paddle-wheel, walking-beam excursion boats of the "IRON STEAMBOAT CO." docked at the foot of 129th St, sailing for Coney Island (of course, the BMT subways were MUCH swifter AND cheaper than the boats; still many enjoyed a leisurely "sea voyage" out to Coney).....

Further on 125th St. and and its "maritime" business......
The DAY LINE (operated by CIRCLE LINE since 1962) eliminated sailings to its W. 125th St. pier in 1964.
Their Yonkers landing was also eliminated that same year (1964)........

When these "ancient history" photos were taken at the 3rd Avenue elevated station, the 125th St. Ferry to Edgewater, NJ, was still in operation, and the DAY LINE's steamboats were calling at their own pier during the excursion season........

Back in the year 1972, we see MABSTOA Fishbowl #6614, as usual, "making the rounds"........

When this 1973 photo was snapped at 125th St. and Riverside Drive, both the 125th St. ferry and the DAY LINE's service to W. 125th were but distant memories.......

Though no location is given for this busy 1973 "action" photo (I DO know that it is NOT W. 42nd, W. 125th, or W. 129th!) it was too good not to include here!
Another one of those classic "we took it all for granted" scenes.........

A real treasure trove of "ol' Noo Yawk" stuff here (W. 42nd. & 12th Avenue, 1972)
Note the old school "TEE-YAY" gent on the right....the batwing ad for RINGLING BROTHERS circus......the classic 1960's-era Fishbowl bus stop sign....the old pier.......the iconic elevated West Side Highway........all now relegated to history.
I'd love to go back to the year 1972 and just spend a weekend taking bus photos here....as well as riding the original CIRCLE LINE "sightseeing yachts".......
Ahh, perchance to dream......

With a recycled front sign from the 1963 order of buses, indicating West Farms origin. (I've still yet to see what was the other Bronx depot to which buses within the 3301-3555 range were assigned; besides there, plus the Manhattan depots of Amsterdam and 132nd Street.) |

It does look like the old Third Avenue el remnant, after it was closed and Bx55 service instituted, but before said el was dismantled. Very likely at Gun Hill Road itself. |
