I noticed that rear tire also, after I studied the photo a bit more after posting.

Going waaaaayyy back (early/mid-60's) I still remember the little signs with Con Edison's cartoon "mascot"("DIG WE MUST!")

Man, I haven't seen the likes of those in over 50 years!

I still remember, though quite young, watching the staid John Tillman (I believe this was WPIX) doing the evening news, with Con Edison sponsoring the news broadcast with their "mascot" and a little jingle (I also remember the lovely Gloria Okon as the weather girl, and her doing a "live-on-the-set spot" for Arnold Brick Oven Bread!)

This would have been the early 1960's.

Man, talk about ANCIENT history......... Shocked Shocked

Jay & Myrtle, 1981 (according to date given)

Note that #2142 (a first Generation Fishbowl) is still in the original "Tee-Yay" green; wouldn't 1981 be a bit late in the game for any bus to still be sporting the old green?

Also wondering (if the photo date [1981] is correct); would first-generation Fishbowls have still been in use.......

At this point, the oldest buses still operating would have been the 2000's. Besides, this was while the Grummans were in one of their "grounded" phases . . .

Appreciate this info; so, it would seem that, regarding the MTA's oldest buses, that a temporary "stay of execution" was in effect.

I am just now recalling a WNEW ("10 O' Clock News) report from that time, on the MTA bringing out "decade-and-a-half-old-clunkers" from storage to pinch-hit for the sidelined GRUMMANS.

Good thing there some "mothballed" buses on hand to help pitch in.....

Just came across these early 70's photos of the 3600's, and something caught my eye.......

Note that, while some of the 3600's have dash advertisement frames, others do not.

Also, note that the ad frames on the buses fitted with them are all devoid of ad cards.......

From what I saw of the NYCTA's bus roster as of February 1966, 3601-3749 (from the 1963 order, the last dual order to GM from TA and MaBSTOA until the A/C batwings of 1966-67) were assigned out of the 126th Street depot (later designated 'MAN' on fareboxes). Evidently since then they "got around." Must've been where the front ad racks originated. (No doubt they were rotated to other depots/garages after the A/C batwings arrived, out of which MAN got 8123-8202).

By the time of those pics, though, 3601-3659 were based out of the then-lone Staten Island depot at Castleton, 3660-3697 were at Fresh Pond (one of the routes there being B26), and 3698-3749 were assigned to Fifth Avenue (now the Jackie Gleason Depot).

As for the "mothballed" buses returned to service, 't'would seem when they were put in storage, no emphasis on repainting them was made.

Appreciate, as usual, your input.

I still clearly recall that WNEW news report showing the stored buses lumbering out of a garage, all were still in the "Tee-Yay" Green.

I also remember seeing more Flxibles than GM's.

IMHO, I don't think anyone ever expected "The Great Grumman Fiasco" to take place, as the new buses were just entering service, all pristine and "ready to roll"............. Rolling Eyes

Pic #330 showing bus #3615 on route M15 - a return engagement of that particular bus to 126th Street, as by 1976 there were a few of the '63 Fishbowls there. (Haven't seen any bus roster lists where any of the Flxibles from either '64, '65 or both were even for 15 minutes at 126th 'MAN'.)

Just curious......

Are there old "Tee-Yay/MaBSTOA" assignment sheets that would give the name of the depots that each bus was once based at, from when the bus first entered service until retirement?

I would guess while some buses called a certain depot "home" for most of their service lives, others were, more or less, "wanderers", eventually being based out of a depot in another area, serving another route.

Thanks for any information.......I've been curious about this for some time, now.....

I'd've loved to see such a list, meself . . . but from what I've seen while certain "core" buses of an order indeed stayed within the depots throughout their service lives, others did indeed wander around. The first order of MaBSTOA buses from 1963 (3301-3555) did indeed go around the mulberry bush of garages in both the Bronx and Manhattan over the course of its approximately 14-year service life (a few doing some time at the Hudson depot when it first opened in 1972). Some buses in an order went through more than two depots over their lives. This was also epidemic within the 'Tee-Yay'.

As for that first OA order, I'm interested in one of the four depots to which certain parts were originally assigned simply because the way the front roll signs were arranged (similar to the 1959-62 'Tee-Yay' New Look bus front roll signs) was not duplicated on subsequent orders of OA buses. I know that West Farms, Amsterdam and 132nd Street were definitely three of the 'first homes' of the '63 order, it's that I can't pin down whether the "other" depot was Coliseum or Kingsbridge.

If you look at bus numbers 3615, 3617, and 3697 from the pictures you posted, you'll see the front dash brackets minus the actual ad rack.

The first TA new looks had a rectangular ad rack mounted below the front headlights.

By the time the OA and TA received their first batwings, series 8000, the GM chrome grill was not applied since the dash ad racks covered it up.

The same applied to the Flxible name plate in the 7000 and 9000 series buses.

If this was a decision by GM and Flxible or by the TA/OA is up for speculation.

Speaking of the garages/bus assignments in relation to them......... how many garages ("Tee-Yay"/MaBSTOA) were in Manhattan and the Bronx, say, in the period between 1960 and 1980?

How many are still used today?

What facilities were either relocated or closed?
