Too bad none of the Flxibles ordered by the 'Tee-Yay' between 1964 and 1966 didn't see much, if any, service within the 126th Street ('MAN') depot for dispatching to any of their five routes . . .

W.B.:

It always fascinated me as to what buses went to what depots as they were delivered.

As a general rule (and I know this held true in NJ for many years), as new buses were delivered many (but not all) older buses were retained for peak hour services, before being finally retired.

Other bus series were often split between divisions (this was a holdover from the old PSNJ trolley days)

About 1985, NJT was assigning some off-beat stuff to my #181 for a time (which used ex-PSNJ Z-300 Fishbowls for many years; later, Metros)

This included suburban Fishbowls, which were ill-suited for the stop-and-go nature of the line (NO rear doors, of course!)

No complaints from Your's Truly, however, as you might guess! Wink

A little topic-related trivia.......

Al Roker (long-time NBC weatherman) once talked about how his dad was a New York bus driver; young Al would often ride along with his dad.

A very close African-American friend of mine (RIP) at work (who was also my supervisor for a time) told me that his dad also drove a New York bus, and was good friend's with Al's dad.

For whatever reason, I never thought to ask my friend what route his dad drove for....oh, well.......

Also, note the train of R-27/30's overhead; looks as though attempts were made to remove the scourge of graffiti (God, that crap was AWFUL....and just EVERYWHERE!!)........

This photo shows Peter Witt #8456 on the "METROPOLITAN" line.

In the 1954 children's book "BIG CITY TRANSPORTATION", there is a photo of an African-American subway conductor operating the doors between two R-11 cars.

In Joe Cunningham's "INTERBOROUGH FLEET", there is a photo (1955) showing an African-American IRT motorman on a Dyre Ave. line Lo-V, with his vestibule door open partially, to admit a rare, welcome breeze on a hot day.

Bus-wise, from the hundreds of NYC bus photos I have researched through bus.nycsubway.org, it seems that the oldest photos showing African-American drivers/dispatchers, etc. date to the late 60's and early 1970's.

One can only imagine what these men felt, sixty/70-odd years ago, joining a workforce that made then an automatic "ultra minority".

It had to take GUTS, I am sure.

Like Your's Truly is fond of saying: "If you're gonna play the game, it's a good idea to know ALL the players"..........

I stand corrected on the streetcar number I had posted; the Peter Witt in the book "BROOKLYN TROLLEYS" (Greller/Watson) with a black motorman is #8466, not #8456, as I incorrectly stated.

Newark (Penn Station) 1969.......

Before Your's Truly had even started school, the City Subway (today's Newark Light Rail) introduced me to my lifelong love of trolleys.

Mom and I rode the line many times when was growing up, and I railfanned it extensively, starting in the early 70's, and midway through the decade.

I got to know the system well, thanks largely to then Supervisor Bob Kittler (a veteran PS trolley man), who allowed me to visit the repair shops under Penn Station, ride the cars out to various photo locations (free of charge) and ocassionaly ride the old flatbed work motor (a cut-down Compromise roof PSNJ streetcar) out to Franklin Avenue and return.

The shop crew were Entertainment Personified, and REALLY took pride in their work (through them, I was able to add several old traction items to my collection!)

I also remember well the motormen (or "operators", if you will); I recall several that were black, and all of them treated me with courtesy.

I still happily recall those wonderful old days......I lost all interest in the line once the new light rail cars (aka "Baby Belugas") replaced the venerable old PCC's.

To me, these days, it's just another ho-hum light rail line; but, back in the day, the City Subway in all its magical, historical magnificence was like a second home to me.

This photo, taken at Penn Station in 1969, shows an outbound car ready to depart (note the white shirt on the lucky fellow at the controls!)

Also, note the classic Johnson fare box; as the big, bulky NCR registers dominated PS routes, these fare boxes added a touch of novelty to this wonderful old PS car line........

Whow today knows of "Joe Clough"?

In the pre-WW1 era, Mr. Clough was the first black man to drive a London motorbus.

Today, it is difficult, if not impossible, to even try to grasp the concept of just what an accomplishment it was, especially back in those early days of buses.

An inspiration for the many that followed him through the decades, to be sure.......
