MaBSTOA 15:
You are most welcome!
Your comments and highly-detailed historical stats truly give tremendous "depth" and insight to these wonderful old bus photos; our good friend W.B, likewise, provides us with a tremendous wealth of bus information from the old days (THANK YOU to W.B, as well!)
I totally agree with you; the original green w/the old "MaBSTOA" insignia and script lettering was, by far, the best scheme that these buses wore......it just seemed tailor-made for them.
Yes, we all took far too much for granted, but, thankfully, we have photos....and memories....to keep those great old days alive......

The pic designated '1220' had a section on their front sign with Highway Gothic fonts that would have dated to the period when the (M)5 was extended north to 178th and Broadway in January 1971. I noticed several front roll signs for Bronx routes in the period from 1971 on (which would have dovetailed with 1969-70 eliminations of some Bx- numbers, i.e. Bx19, Bx6, Bx21, and their consolidation with existing routes) with that same group of type on their front destination signs.
The other equation: All three of those buses, at the time, were assigned out of 132nd Street depot (where M11 was prior to the 1972 opening of Hudson depot). |

W.B.:
As usual, greatly appreciate your always highly-informative historical "tidbits".
It is quite obvious (from many of your comments in previous posts) that the subject of roller curtain styles (fonts, splicing, etc.) is a fascinating topic all on its own.
Just look at how much discussions there are among subway buffs (your's truly included!) on the many subway roll sign variations over the years; new splicings, blanked out letters/numbers, etc.)!
Recall, too, when the prewar IND cars had to carry signage for former BMT routes, when some of "Arnines" were transferred over the old BMT in the later 60's ("LL", etc.)
Too, recall new rollsign readings for the "KK", which debuted in the late 1960's.
Just discussing MaBSTOA roller curtains through the years, I have found, to be greatly interesting.....a subject I never tire of reading about!

This was true of bus front roll signs, too. Take what from 1966 to 1974 was known as Rt 2A. With all pics courtesy bus.nycsubway.org, let's compare and contrast:
Fifth Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets, c. 1967. Ostensibly, the old "Queen Mary" 2124 was the focal point, but 1964-65 built 5508 running the 2A line shows the full description "via 7 Ave":
https://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?2410
Same sign, 1972, passing Fifth and 38th, with "via 7 Ave" blanked out on batwinged bus 8779:
https://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?3223
Same bus (at Fifth and 66th), same blanked out sign:
https://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?3224
Apparently, of the 1966-67 batwinged A/C Fishbowls, 146th Street depot got the last 85 or so, 8696-8780. |

W.B.:
GREAT pics....especially like the one with the "Queen Mary"!
Speaking of roller curtain, to this day, I never cared for the later signs that began using mostly lower-case letters (the same for subway roller signs and station signs)
I always preferred the "all caps" signs not only because they were "traditional", but also, so much easier to read, especially from a distance (again, this held true for the subways)
Recall those HUGE "Sesame Street" letters on the noses of R-40's/42's when they first hit the rails...they were almost like billboards!!!!

Pic 268 with the 'New York City Transit Authority' script atop the standee windows on the side, shows where that for MaBSTOA buses produced up until 1965-66 came from. |

Notice, on pic 2845, the side sign - the only "new" one made for batwings that I could tell. Must've been grafted on to an existing side sign. Never saw 'batwing' side signs for what started out as M23X in early 1971. |
