A nostalgic (if somewhat melancholy) bygone scene at the Fresh Pond yards, circa-1969/1970.

Here we see an elderly "Q" car, a prewar IND car converted into a work car, and a group of MACKS, obviously OOS.......

These two views of the ramp leading up to the BMT Fresh Pond Road station date from 1971 and 1974; note the Fishbowls* (in "Tee-Yay" green) stored between the ramps.........

(*Note the bus at the rear; obviously it was involved in an accident; it also appears that some buses are minus their roller curtains)

The same location, but with Old Looks in place of the Fishbowls.

As in the previous photo, I'm guessing that the buses were all OOS (the Fishbowls, certainly, were not "old stock" at the time of the photos)

Another scene at Fresh Pond Rd., 1975.

Again, note the Fishbowls in "Tee-Yay" green, clearly OOS..........

Same location, 1974.

Again, the OOS Fishbowls dominate the scene.......

By 1979, when this "Museum Lo-V" fantrip was snapped climbing up the ramp leading to the Fresh Pond Rd. station, the area between the El ramps was empty; whatever OOS buses that had been previously stored there had finally been removed.....

Getting back to 1969......

Fishbowls then dominated "The Crossroads Of The World", while, 'neath the teeming streets of bustlin' Times Square...........

Now....onto the New York bus front.........

What occurred NYCTA bus-wise during that year? (I believe the last MACKS had been retired the previous year, but am not sure)

Peace, brothers, and have yourselves a GROOVY day............... Very Happy Wink

How about exact fare on buses beginning on August 31 - that certainly affected a lot of New York riders in 1969. CTA followed suit on November 6 as did most other systems.

X-Astorian:

Yes, many urban systems began adopting an "exact change" policy in the late 60's, due to rising crime.

In Baltimore, (1968) three youths shot an on-duty driver to death aboard his bus; the thugs robbed him of $65.00; as of June of that year, BTC bus drivers were no longer required to make change for passengers.......

Here's another photo taken at Fresh Pond (1969); here we see a "Q" car fan trip climbing the ramp up to the station.

Note that OOS Old Looks are parked between the tracks; not long after this photo was taken, the Old Looks vanished and Fishbowls replaced them.

Interestingly, photos taken at this location, prior to 1969, show the area between the subway/el ramps empty, with no buses parked there......

Here are two views of the same location, taken in 1955 and in 1965.

Again, no buses are parked between the BMT el ramps; IMHO, it appears that the NYCTA began using that space as a yard for buses to awaiting scrapping (that a number of Fishbowls, then roughly only about 9 years old at the time of the 1969/1970 photos, were already OOS seems to make for an interesting backstory, of sorts. Only one bus, at the far rear, appears to have suffered any serious damage)

The "Tee-Yay", it seems, only stored buses here for a few years.

The 1955 photo holds much for the rapid transit buffs amongst us here (yours truly included!); note the yard is chock full of elderly convertible "gate cars", then still used on the Myrtle Avene El (these would be replaced by the "Q" cars in 1958)

Also, look closely and spot the Clark "BLUEBIRD" trainsets, which were OOS by the time of this photo.

*I was lucky enough to come across this interesting photo (Fresh Pond Rd., in 2007)

One lone OOS RTS is sitting in the area between the subway/el ramps; look closely at the message "DO NOT START" chalked on the windshield........

* This photo is, to date, the only post-1974 photo I've seen at this location where there was a bus (or buses) parked between the subway ramps.

Too, it is the only photo I've seen with only one bus parked there.

Fellows:

Regarding the late 60's/early 70's Fresh Pond photos........

I am curious to know about the "OOSBR" ("Out Of Service Bus Repository") between the BMT subway/el ramps.

As I had stated earlier, I was surprised to see so many Fishbowls in several of the photos (when the buses were barely a decade old) stored between the BMT ramps at Fresh Pond (I'm only going to guess here), that the Fishbowls (and also the Old Looks) had previously operated on Brooklyn routes.

Also interesting to note the many ex-BRT trolley wire line poles that were still prominent in those photos......

"NYO"

*The 2007 photo showing the OOS RTS with "DO NOT START" chalked on the windshield was also interesting, especially given both the late date of the photo and the fact that it was the only bus there.

Some if not all the new looks are TDH-5301, first generation NYCTA fishbowls.

The old look GMs, some, are ex-MaBSTOA TDH-5106 that were transferred to Brooklyn. In fact, they were ex-Fifth Avenue Coach.

I don’t see the trolleycoach wires.

MaBSTOA 15:

Thanks for the additional info; I had the feeling that at least some of those OOS buses had previously been assigned to Brooklyn routes.

The poles I were referring to referred to the poles themselves, not any wires.

Recall, in the early days of electrified BRT El operations, the trains utilized overhead wires and trolley poles when the trains left the elevated structures and ran at ground level, before those lines were modernized in later years.......
