Three "Noo Yawk" classics we'll never see the likes of again (12th Avenue & 42nd, 1982)
Note, also, the rusting remains of the old West Side Highway, then under demolition.....

Fellows:
Was watching a special on ABC 7 earlier, hosted by Eyewitness News weatherman Lee Goldberg, on the 50th Anniversary of the Moon landing.
Being heavily into both the Moon and astronomy in general since my long-gone childhood days, I made sure I did not miss this special; it was educational, insightful, and stirring all the way.....good work, Lee!
He was on location at the old GRUMMAN plant in Long Island; a tremendous wealth of space/aviation history is to be found here!
This, of course, got me to thinking of a certain bus that (literally) "hit the streets" of Noo Yawk, some 50-odd years ago; all I can say is, (thankfully!!) GRUMMAN did FAR BETTER at designing SPACE CRAFT than it did designing BUSES!!
Speaking of the MTA's GRUMMAN fleet............

Just as some seem to consider the New Look as "not a true 5th Avenue bus", it also seems that some also regarding the late GRUMMAN as not being a "true MaBSTOA bus" (IMHO)
I say this because, while there are hundreds of photos of MaBSTOA New Looks (GMC and FLEX) at nycsubway.org (and praise be to the gods for that!), there are very few photos of the GRUMMAN in MaBSTOA service.
The RTS fared at least a little better (photo-wise), but not by all that much; there are not really all that many now-classic photos of MaBSTOA RTS buses at nycsubway.org, especially when compared to the many hundreds of (again) the New Looks.
It's like Your's Truly is fond of saying: "If you're gonna play the game, you gotta know all the players."
Just my 2 1/2 cents worth, here....

Actually Grumman wasn't the designer, they bought Flxible from Rohr. |

That is true: I always seem to forget that!
In any event, back in the day, I never thought that the RTS would, one day, become the classic it later became (and deservedly so!)
The lowly GRUMMAN, on the other hand, still seems to be somewhat as a "flash in the pan", enthusiast-wise.
It took me awhile, I will admit, to "warm up" to them, but I eventually grew to like the GRUMMAN (as well as the later METRO, which I knew well on NJT for years)) and still miss them today.....
