Some second-hand Flxies on Steinway Transit/Queens Transit/Queens Surface. Again, from this site's gallery. This thread has reminded me how much I really liked these buses. Ah, well.

Again, greatly appreciate these wonderful old photos!
I always like the Flexies; the only thing I DIDN't like about the NJDOT Flexies that arrived here in New Jersey in the mid-70's, was that they sent almost all of the remaining Old Looks then operating to the scrap yard.
Aside from that, I always liked them, and, of course, enjoyed riding them.
Like many other "old school" bus enthusiasts, I didn't realize just how much I really liked them until they were all gone.
At least, I have a LOT of great memories of the Flexies.......

Didn't Queens Surface acquire those 35 footer's from Albany? |

traildriver:
Speaking of second-hand buses, without a doubt, the long-defunct WASHINGTON STREET company in Hoboken (only a 14-block run) had to be the undisputed king of second- and third-hand buses for decades.
As recently as the 1960's (and this I remember well) the company was running, among other antiques, buses that dated back to the mid and late 1930's.
In later years, they also aquired second-hand Old Looks from PS (and, I believe, several from New York outfits)
Into the 1980's, the ex-PS buses were still wearing their 1960's PSNJ two-tone green; you could STILL see where the old circular PS emblem had been located!
The newest buses I can recall them operating were GMC Fishbowls; I cannot recall ever seeing any Flexies........that old company was indeed a rolling museum for years, and i miss it still......

Actually it was Queens Transit that got a slew of Flxies from CDTA in 1984. Queens Surface bought seven from Command in 1989 (493-499; photo of 496 below) and four from Hudson Bus in 1992 (83-86). [info from the MCA issue on Queens Surface and predecessors, April-June 2007]

Nice to see a BUS that LOOKS like a BUS instead of a giant caterpillar or an oversized milk cartoon!!
Yup, those Flexies were true classics (note, as I have mentioned earlier, how the windshield is clearly a larger version of what was used on the postwar TWINS...I guess imitation is INDEED the SINCEREST form of flattery, after all!)

*BTW: What depots were those buses based out of? |
B37 (and Flx 4089) would have been based out of what was then Fifth Avenue (now Jackie Gleason) depot, while bus #550 at left (with the rear window remade as 4-piece) was based out of East New York depot.
550 sure got around. Its trajectory (no info on where it was from 1960 to '65) was as follows:
- Feb. 1966: 126th Street (MAN)
- Aug. 1969: East New York (ENY)
- March 1972: same
- Jan. 1, 1973: Staten Island (SI) - Castleton depot (later CA)
- By Jan. 1, 1974 it could have been anywhere. |

W.B.:
You're the man (again!)....thanks for the interesting "trajectory report", especially on #550!
Without a doubt, that bus DID get around....a true "wanderer" (recalling, now, Dion's 1962 hit, "The Wanderer"!
I always found it quite interesting to learn of bus assignments throughout the years (both in "Noo Yawk" and and here in NJ)
With certain companies I grew up with (such as the long-defunct "ORANGE & BLACK", there was only one garage, and so, all of their buses would have been assigned to that one garage until they were either retired or sold.
With a huge system like PSNJ (with multiple garages on several divisions), bus transfers between garages could be quite interesting, to say the least, but, it seems that most buses simply stayed put in their original "home" garage until they were retired.
One bus (D900) a 4509 originally served the ESSEX Division (it had been built as a "new generation ASV", and, later had all electrical gear removed, converting it into a conventional diesel)
By the early 60's, the once-unique #D900 had been re-assigned to the HUDSON Division, and operated out of the GREENVILLE garage until retirement.......
