|

All:
I have no idea if this same sound was heard on the GM New Looks rostered by the NYCTA/MTA, but I do clearly remember the sound on NJ GM's, even though the last time I heard it was many years ago.
This sound was heard (this was especially noticeable if you were sitting towards the rear of the bus) when the bus was stopped at a light or making a stop.
The only way I can even try to describe this sound would be to say it sounded like a "harmonic wheeze", that came in "series" until the bus began moving again.
Any clues?
Thanks.....

Wouldn't that depend on whether it was a 6V-71 or an 8V-71? |

As I have not the slightest idea as to what engines these Fishbowls were using, I wouldn't even hazard a guess.
The only think I can state with certainty, is that I only heard this sound on GM New Looks.......

A lot of the QTC Fishbowls on which I had rode in the 60's tended to idle very roughly when waiting at a light or at a bus stop. |

Q65A:
The Fishbowls I rode in New Jersey years ago, from what I recall, seemed to idle (more or less) smoothly; I CAN remember, however, riding some of the suburban models (ex-PSNJ/ORANGE & BLACK, etc.) that could sound a bit more "rough" when idling.
And, as I had stated in my original post, that "harmonic wheeze" seemed pretty much confined to transit models......

NYO--it is very difficult trying to imagine the sound from your description...
I wonder if the sound you are describing could be coming from the air compressor or some other pneumatic source? Perhaps the air suspension leveling valves? |

Your suggestions would seem to makes sense, and perhaps you are right.
I have not heard this sound in over 20 years, when the very last of the "indy" Fishbowls vanished from my area.
However, I heard that peculiar sound too many times to count over the years to ever forget it.......

I vividly remember that the GM TDH-5301s that Triboro Coach and Green Bus Lines had made a jet like whining noise as they travel down the street. These buses did not have a/c. Who knows what the whining noise was...
BTW, did your buses with the weird noise, did they have air conditioning? It could have been the a/c compressor |

MaBSTOA 15:
I THINK (bit am not sure) that at least SOME of these New Looks MIGHT have been a/c equipped.
However, that would further complicate the issue, as I would hear this same noise during the winter months.
In really trying to jog my memory, I most recall the sound on ex-NHBL New Look transits, as well as the "semi suburban" (front door only, a/c equipped) New Looks that were originally operated by ORANGE & BLACK.
I am now going back now well over 30 years with these recollections......
