[NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629]

Fellows:

Do you remember the first time you caught a glimpse of a GRUMMAN (or later, a METRO, depending upon your territory)?

I must admit that, at the very beginning, I paid little attention to the MTA Grummans, as I was far too enamored with the New Looks that then dominated the fleet.

In all honesty, I really paid the "newcomers" no mind.

In fact, I must be totally honest here, I CHEERED when they were all removed from service, and cheered even louder that tried-and-true "Old School" GMC's and Flexies trekked up in a massive caravan to the Big Apple, ready to go to work, taking up the slack left by the new GRUMMAN buses (I used to call them "Gremlins" to myself!

(Let me tell you, here and now, my heart softened QUITE a bit, as time went on, regarding these "clunkers"!)

I rode my first NJT METRO about 1983, on the #181 (former TNJ #21); I must admit I was disappointed at not riding home aboard one of my familiar ex-PSNJ Z-300 Fishbowls, but, I tried my best to "warm" to this newcomer, by pretending it was some sort of European demo (that didn't work all that well)

In fact, it would be many years before I DID finally begin to like them, especially some of the second-hand GRUMMANS that were then running for "indy" outfits in my area (one in particular, listing heavily to port, more or less wormed its way into my affections, back around 1993)

As the years went by, I actually found myself LIKING these buses; suddenly, about 15 years ago, they disappeared (and I STILL haven't....and probably WON'T....."warm" up to the replacement NABI;s ("Eskimo Pies" to yours truly!)

All I can say today, is, "MAN, DO I MISS 'EM!"

Anyway, enjoy another trip back into time.....
