Here's another typical "Noo Yawk" scene that is (IMHO) made even more timeless with two venerable RTS's passing one another, going in opposite directions (Ft. Washington & 172nd, 1983)

Like the earlier New Looks and Old Looks, the RTS always seemed "right at home" in the older neighborhoods.....

Even the last of the "black type on yellow background" Manhattan (and Staten Island) street signs are gone now . . .

W.B.:

That is, indeed, yet another example of the old adage: "ah, they'll be around forever!" (just think of how many times those street street signs have changed over the decades!)

It is interesting to think of just how much in New York has changed since the first RTS buses began operations for the MTA:

New Looks (GMC and FLXIBLE) were still dominating the MTA bus fleet.

GRUMMANS were still to be seen (and ridden)

"SMEE" cars (albeit covered in graffiti) ruled the rails in the subways (tokens were still in use, and incandescent lighting and original change booths could still be found in certain stations)

1950-steam ferries (along with the 1965 "KENNEDY" diesels) still carried Staten Island commuters across the Bay to St. George.

The Staten Island Ferry still carried vehicles (this practice stopped in 2001, post-9/11)

One did not have to go through security checks (nor fear terrorism, if folks then even knew of the word) when visiting the Statue of Liberty and other landmarks.

The legendary GG-1's (the remaining units working on NJT, between South Amboy and New York) were still running (but would gone by late 1983)

The original "House That Ruth Built": was still standing, as was Shea Stadium.

Time-honored vinyl records and cassette tapes were the law of the land (recall "Record Explosion"?)

WNEW radio was still the choice for "Easy Listening".

In New Jersey, a few hardy Old Looks were still operating in the Jersey City-area; SOMERSET still had some Old Look suburbans, which were retired about 1981.

CIRCLE LINE still operated the Statue Of Liberty ferry.

GIMBELS, ALEXANDERS, and many other long-established New York department stores were still open for business.

The classic "DON'T WALK" signs were everywhere, then....who ever thought that they would, one day, vanish like the Old Looks, New Looks, GRUMMANS, and RTS's?

And, all of this, we thought would be around forever.

Like the RTS.

The only thing that remains constant is change.

Time, indeed, marches on.........

"NYO"

RTS #4149, seen here at the 2001 BusFest".

I really have to wonder who, back then, ever thought of the day when the RTS would indeed be a TRUE "Museum Bus" (I know I sure didn't!)......

All:

Years ago, before I retired, I can remember street vendors in the City (and also, in the PABT) that, among the other stuff they were selling, also sold die-cast RTS buses, about "HO" scale in size.

They were done in the white/blue MTA livery, and had destination signs reading "UNION SQ."

I probably paid about $2 for each one, then; a pretty darn good price!

At the time, however, the thought of these once-familiar buses vanishing from the City's streets were far, far, removed from my mind..........

"NYO"

*The same die-cast RTS was also available w/red and orange stripes, with an ad for "TITANIC" on the sides; the destination sign on this one read: "DOWN TOWN"

I also have a few of these........
