Gentlemen:

As bus enthusiasts, we, as a group, often tend to ignore the commonplace until it begins to vanish.

Then, reality sets in (much too fast), and we start focusing on what we had previously ignored.

As an example, I have loved New Looks from Day One; but, back when they were still "new buses" it was the Old Look buses (as well as WHITES, MACKS, etc.) that were my favorites, and what I focused on the most.

Once the Old Looks were gone, I found myself liking the New Looks even more than I had previously, riding them every chance I got.

This was especially true when the GRUMMAN/METRO began to replace the very last Old Looks as well as the oldest New Looks.

Then, when the GRUMMAN/METRO began to enter their twilight years, I found myself warming to them more than I thought possible, and again, rode them as much as I could.

NJT's stalwart (and vastly underappreciated, IMHO) METRO fleet is now gone more than a decade; at one time, they dominated the NJT routes in my area, seemingly forever.

To my surprise, in later years, I even started to "get chummy" with the RTS; today, in my area, they are now gone more than a decade.

Today, in NYC, the once oh-so commonplace RTS is now a minority in the fleet, as new models take over the task of moving the masses..

The old saying, "Here today, gone tomorrow", in our hobby, speaks many volumes.

Yet another reason why we should be most thankful to those "old school" transit photographers, who, back in the day, snapped many hundreds....thousands....of bus photos.

To them, we give a sincere "Thank You" for allowing us, many years later, to remember "yesterday's commonplace".......... Wink

During my long-ago commuting days, I witnessed this classic "action scene" twice-daily for years.

Though I greatly enjoyed the show, I, too, thought, it would be here "forever".........

Here's a classic 1981 scene that I'm sure many of us took for granted, at the time, interesting (and unusual) as it was............

I'll be in NYC this Tuesday and hope to catch the historic fleet out on 42nd St. This is all we have left and I look forward to it every year.

John:

Sure hope you get a chance to catch a few rides on those historic buese; you are right, that is all that is left of the once-mighty GMC and MACK fleets that were once so commonplace in New York and elsewhere.

Baltimore (as you certainly know) has a great trolley museum, with a few vintage buses; I have loved to have seen Baltimore's MTA roster its own historic fleet.

Two great buses to have in such a collection would have been one of the 1963 New Looks (also, Baltimore's first air-conditioned buses) which replaced the last BTC streetcars (Routes #8 and #15) in late 1963, as well as an ACF-BRILL.

Even though the RTS types were not at all popular in Baltimore, for many reasons, at least one should have been saved; likewise, the once commonplace Flex Metro.

As I said earlier, too many of us (myself included, I must admit) took too much for granted, back in the day, when today's commonplace becomes tomorrow's rarity......
