This one is for the New York bus scholars here.......

I have seen many photos of NYCTA/MTA Fishbowls where the "GMC" logo on the front dash is intact; whereas, in other pictures, it has been removed.

Was this in any sort of violation with GM? (removal of the "GMC" insignia)

What was the reason why these "GMC" insignia were removed from some buses, but not others?

I have noticed that, in many photos, some buses had the insignia covered over by a large ad frame; I would guess GM did not have a problem with this practice, in covering its trademark.

I have seen photos of Fishbowls from other cities, where either the insignia plate (trapezoid?) is either blank, or carrying the bus' fleet number.

As always, greatly appreciate any info........

Thanks in advance....

"NYO"

Just for "comparison"......

Here is an "AC TRANSIT" (Oakland) Fishbowl; note that the letters "GMC" are absent from the nameplate, which, instead, sports a fleet number......

When you buy a vehicle, you can do what ever you want to it. The manufacturer has nothing to say about you removing their name from it. You can even put a 'Ford' logo over the GMC one, as I have seen in Detroit years ago...It was a GMC 'fishbowl' used to shuttle FoMoCo employees around the area.

Have you ever looked at United Parcel Service vehicle's? I challenge you to find a manufacturer's name on any of them...
Some of them were built exclusively for UPS....

traildriver:

Appreciate this info; it did clear up some of the mystery for me! Wink

I had no idea that there was no problem with the the NYCTA/MTA (or other companies) removing (or covering) the GMC nameplates; look at how many hundreds of New Looks carried front ad racks, which would have blocked the "GMC" plate, anyway.

Thanks again for your input.......... Very Happy

BTW:

I'm going to have to start taking a better look at those UPS trucks! Rolling Eyes

This reply has to come with a strong MAYBE.
Ten or more years ago, I read somewhere that the NYCTA objected to carrying the brand name of the bus because ultimately they were being charged for that extra item. Hence, they demanded that (Orion?) deliver buses without the brand name.

Now this is something else I did not know about; thanks for the heads-up!

In all honesty, thae last NJT buses that I can recall seeing the manufacturer's nameplate on were the now retired Flxible Metros.

It's always interesting to see how such "mundane" items as a builder's nameplate came stir up some interesting (and educational) discussion.......

Ups didn't want to give free publicity to whoever built the step vans. Also when one gets retired its painted white and sent to be crushed and a ups employee has to be present and watch it getting crushed.
