There's a lot of bus action going on in this wintry scene at St. Nicholas and 169th St., back in 1983.......

Audubon Avenue & 161 St., 1983.

These two Fishbowls are just sluggin' through the slush of the previous snowfall, with nary a problem.......

*The "BUS-O-RAMA" ads for "JOSEPH & THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT" and "42nd STREET" further date this nostalgic, wintry photo......

6th Avenue & 30th St., 1982.

Nothing says "Noo Yawk in da winter" better than buses encrusted with gritty slush, road salt, and grime, rumbling along busy streets decorated with grimy, sooty, "city snow"......

On a bright and sunny winter's day back in '83, we see a GREEN LINES Grumman (#557) operating on the Q60, with the handsome and majestic elevated viaduct for the IRT's #7 Flushing line looming in the background (the classic World's Fair "Bluebirds" then ruled the line)

Looks like this photo was snapped just a day or two after a pretty decent snow......

That area was basically "Plant Row" because of all the plant shops along that stretch. The building between 29th and 30th Streets dates this as much as the re-re-repainted A/C batwing Fishbowl; it has since been torn down, and yet another luxury high-rise sits on that block.

W.B:

A good point to bring up; in many vintage bus photos, the structures and other "street hardware" seen in the background, in many cases, no longer exist.

Or, if they do, they are changed almost beyond recognition.

The ads on the bus themselves, as well as on storefronts and rooftops, also, truly date a photo.

With the buses, it is truly interesting to see them in different paint schemes, batwings with and without rear door destination signs, Fishbowls with or without their "GMC" insignias on the front dash.......so much in these old photos that is more than worth the time to pick them out.....

This isn't a "snow scene" but too good not to share here; in speaking of old signage, etc. that dates a photo as much as the buses themselves do, take a look at this photo (Jay & Myrtle, 1972), and talk about "dated".

Of course, the green Flex New look also serves to date this old photo......

Barely a dusting is left on the ground at Sutphin Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue, in this 1972 photo.

I could never understand why the MTA (or any other transit operator, for that matter) went to lower-case letters on bus and subway roller curtains starting in the 70's; they were, in most, but not all instances (at least IMHO) harder to decipher at a distance (and even up fairly close) than the old curtains which featured all capital letters.....

A "wintertime" photo (but no snow to be seen), taken at Washington Plaza in 1972.

This is an interesting photo, showing not only two "first generation" Fishbowls, but also, overhead, a train of R-27/R-30's; two of the cars sport their original red paint, while the other cars have been repainted into the "Ronan-era" silver/blue, which I never cared for.

No matter....the cars would soon be so covered with ugly scrawls of bold graffiti, that the original paint would have barely been visible, anyway.

I was also VERY partial to those sleek-looking "Art Deco" clearance lights on the first generation Fishbowls......

Funny thing how no matter what city you lived in Fishbowls were everywhere and that's just the way it was. Never gave a second thought about what would come next and now the sight of a Fishbowl in one of these photos makes me smile.
