The last new buses ordered for service on routes operated by Fifth Avenue Coach Lines and Surface Transit have their grand debut at a ceremony held outside the Bronx County Building, at which FACL's glee club, under the direction of Medley May, perform the "Bus Song." Prior to the festivities, the new coaches travel along the Grand Concourse.
The buses - a total of 100 TDH-5301's, at a cost of $28,000 each - are split among the various divisions operated by the company: 3111-3160 are flagged on the sides as Fifth Avenue Coach Lines, Inc., while 3161-3210 are marked Surface Transit, Inc. The former group will be divvied up amongst most of the depots of the FACO and NYCO Divisions, while the latter set will be scattered within ST's garages; they are expected to run on a total of 17 routes altogether in Manhattan and the Bronx. Together with an order from earlier in the year of the same New Looks - air-conditioned units numbered 1-10, the last five of which went to Surface Transit, and non-air-conditioned 3101-3110 - these are not only the last new buses put into service by FACL and ST, but the only set of buses known colloquially as "Fishbowls" they will operate. These will remain in service through the 1962 MaBSTOA takeover (one year after which saw 1-10 renumbered as 3211-3220), and run up to 1973. |
