Great nostalgia....

I too, recall that sign, painted on the rear of a brick building advertising the All American Bus Terminal. Also prominent on that same sign was an ad for the Quaker City Bus Company, which shared AABL's terminal. The sign was visible on the north side of W41st street, about midblock, slightly closer to 7th. On the NW corner of 41st and 7th avenue, was the last remaining independent bus terminal...the Consolidated Bus Terminal, only used by Walter's Transit, and some tour buses. I bet that sign is still there, just covered up by a new building on 41st.....

The photo that show's the Taft hotel, reminded me of how popular that large hotel was with visiting charter bus groups of high school students from all over the country touring NYC and the East....they must have had a huge sales department soliciting that business. And they really catered to that trade.
Sort of like the Harrington Hotel in Washington, DC.

traildriver:

I had forgotten the old "QUAKER CITY BUS COMPANY" ad; dang, I wish I wish (again!) I had taken a few photos.....

I also recall the lot in the vicinity for the old "DOUBLE DECK TOURS" (I believe that was the name of the outfit) that operated those wonderfully noisy and decrepit old double deckers; I remember seeing them every day in the Wall Street area, especially during the warmer months.

I always had a soft spot in my heart for noisy, snorting, decrepit old buses.....then again, that's nothing new for yours truly...... Wink

I am also now thinking (old sign-wise) of the old IRT, BMT, and IND signs that were still so commonplace back in the 80's; I still remember a number of ancient 1904-era "DO NOT CROSS TRACKS" signs dating from the old INTERBOROUGH era; also, you could still spot old "H&M TUBES" signs, if you knew where to look (thankfully, I DID take a few pictures of these)...... Very Happy

W.B:

Any clues as to what company operated the coach seen behind the van, facing the camera?

I can't really tell from that photo, but wasn't that around the time of the big scandal with the cracked frames (or was it axle's?) on the Grumman 870 fleet?

IIRC, the MTA arranged to lease a bunch of temporary replacements from both the Washington DC system, as well as a fleet of white, retired MC-8's from Hausman Bus Sales, formerly in the Greyhound fleet. That photo looks like it could be a white MC-8.

Those were the only restroom equipped coaches ever operated by the MTA to my knowledge, although they were locked while in MTA service...[/quote] I was at the hounds garage in Washington dc when I drove for Clausen bus and there was a bunch of the MC 8s there back from my. They were returned in rough shape according to the mechanic I was talking to.

Buses 'n Signs, Brooklyn-style........ Wink

http://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?1460 *note the "MANPOWER" employment agency; that sign would indeed be considered sexist today......(!!)
Note the other interesting signage in the photo as well.

http://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?1458 * I am VERY fortunate to have one of those classic Fishbowl "BUS STOP" signs in my collection today; the "MAYS" placard on the dash of #4109 also wonderfully dates this 1972 photo.......

That should be of no surprise....
They ran the heck out of them on express runs over the rough city streets, and probably did the least bit of maintenance, that they could get away with. Not to mention, they were already retired from their first 'life' in the Greyhound fleet... Wink

* Notice the Fishbowl suburban approaching on the left; the insignia on the front looks like SOMERSET's "Blue Star Route".........cannot be sure, though.....

The Puerto Rican Day Parade must've been held on that date, for Rt. 5 (M5) to have traveled along Seventh in that area. I have noticed that on such days, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 15 (the last-numbered today's Q32) all traveled down Lexington Avenue up to 42nd Street.

Those 'Fishbowl "BUS STOP" ' signs were made well into the first year of the Department of Transportation around 1977; I saw once an eBay auction for one such sign which clearly noted 'DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION' below. Of course, those are extremely rare compared with the ones that indicate 'DEPT OF TRAFFIC'.

W.B.

COOL trivia....I never would have guessed; really appreciate your "in depth" comments and input! Wink

Again, as I am fond of saying, there is usually more to an old bus/transit photo than meets the eye......"knowing the subject" (as you do) really helps make a photo "POP"! Very Happy

W.B.:

More great trivia! Very Happy

Mine was given to me by my then-supervisor/buddy who lived in Staten Island and commuted in via express bus; he was coming home from work one day, and saw a couple of MTA guys replacing the old Fishbowl sign.

He asked them if he could have it for a "friend who is really into buses"; the one guy just gave it to him, and said: "Sure...better than just trashing it!" Very Happy

This was back around 1985; though my friend sadly passed on a few years ago, I still have that old sign prominently displayed, a rare transit collectible, as well as a great gift from a good friend no longer here.....

In these old photos, once again, the store signage is today as nostalgic as the buses themselves; how well I recall similar "urban landscapes" in New Jersey......

http://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?1619 *in this photo, note that the sign for "GARFIELD's" luggage store also recalls the old GARFIELD cafeterias.
