The WAMATA Fishbowl on the left is still wearing its 1960's DC TRANSIT paint (is that a "Hound" approaching in the distance??)

The Checker Marathon further dates this old photo, now nearly 40 years old.......

*Also, note the classic 1950's-era "TOPP'S" restaurant/bar sign on the left.........

Ah yes, the same color scheme as on that 1956 demonstration air-conditioned bus ('3200') that, because of its 102" width, Fifth Avenue Coach Lines could not keep.

W.B.:

Right you are; that DC TRANSIT scheme was indeed stylish and also caught the eye!

Too, recall, the PCC cars, which ran until 1962, also sported that same handsome paint scheme.

I cannot believe it is now nearly 40 years since the DC buses came north to fill in for the Grummans....man, time flies...... Rolling Eyes

Doesn't look like 8th and 31st to me . . . might've been more 50th Street between Broadway and 7th Avenue. But I agree about the bygone signage . . .

W.B.:

Well, you certainly know the "territory" far better than I do! Wink

Speaking of old signage, I still regret never taking a photo of that huge painted "ALL AMERICAN BUS TERMINAL" sign that was still visible into the 80's, near the PABT. Sad

It never ceases to amaze me as to how commonplace such old signage lasted, even if long neglected.

The old electrical/neon jobs were my faves....... Wink

* Notice the Fishbowl suburban approaching on the left; the insignia on the front looks like SOMERSET's "Blue Star Route".........cannot be sure, though.....

Thanks to W. B. Fishbowl!
On Google Street view of West 50th Street, the lens makes the corner building at Broadway seem wider. However, the fire escape remains to the same windows, and the brickwork to the left of the fire escape appears to be the same. The building number 200, a shoe repair store in the older photo, is probably where a new in-building stairway to northbound #1 is. I miss Chock full o'Nuts on the corner.

N4:

When I was just starting at my job on Wall Street in 1979, there was still a Chock Full O' Nuts right near (or on) Broadway, where a small open park was later built, just across the street from the old Twin Towers (RIP)

That place was PACKED during the morning breakfast rush; I NEVER came out hungry, that's for sure! Wink

And, man, that wonderful coffee cake........ Very Happy

Great nostalgia....

I too, recall that sign, painted on the rear of a brick building advertising the All American Bus Terminal. Also prominent on that same sign was an ad for the Quaker City Bus Company, which shared AABL's terminal. The sign was visible on the north side of W41st street, about midblock, slightly closer to 7th. On the NW corner of 41st and 7th avenue, was the last remaining independent bus terminal...the Consolidated Bus Terminal, only used by Walter's Transit, and some tour buses. I bet that sign is still there, just covered up by a new building on 41st.....

The photo that show's the Taft hotel, reminded me of how popular that large hotel was with visiting charter bus groups of high school students from all over the country touring NYC and the East....they must have had a huge sales department soliciting that business. And they really catered to that trade.
Sort of like the Harrington Hotel in Washington, DC.
