W.B.:
From photos we've seen in the past, the oldest SURFACE and ex-FACCo buses indeed were the "Dangerfields" of that era ion their twilightyears....grimy, battered, weather-beaten....and, yet, somehow, STILL manage to run (at least, most of the time!)

.......speaking of "weatherbeaten, battered, time-worn" old buses, here's an early 1960's "portrait" of a well-abused FACCo #1700, clearly a veteran bus that has seen little "respect" in recent years......

It was indeed 1962, taken between 50th and 51st Streets actually and running on the #11 (which, prior to 1964, was based out of the 100th Street depot, now "Tuskegee Airmen"). But it - a postwar GM TD-4506 - actually started out on each side attributed to 'MADISON AVENUE COACH COMPANY, INC.' before being switched after November 1951 to 'NEW YORK CITY OMNIBUS CORPORATION'; 'FIFTH AVENUE COACH LINES INC.' was the third entity shown (but this was the fourth overall layout - FACL was initially stretched out all over directly above the passenger windows before being confined to that emergency exit as seen in that pic).
The maintenance practices of NYCO (which pre-1951 subsidiaries included Madison Avenue Coach and Eighth Avenue Coach Corporation) fell somewhere in-between the tip-top shape of FACCo buses (which "classic" Old Looks were in the 2200-2500 range) and the truly Dangerfield-ish Surface fleet (both GM and Mack). Not the best, but not hopelessly atrocious either. There are pics out there, mostly on WorthPoint, of #1700 when it first came into service under MACCO aegis. Certainly in better shape than by this point in time in that faded photo.
Below is how it looked restored more or less to what the colors should have been.

W.B.:
Your's Truly started school in that same year (1962); I well recall NHBL's square-window Old Looks, soldiering on until about 1966.
From what I can recall, their buses were (at least at that time) pretty decently maintained.
Quick question on the earliest postwar FACCo Old Looks:
Were these GM buses all used to replace the open-top double-deckers, or were some also used to replace the old single-deck YELLOWS of the later 1930's?

This discussion has me know recalling the Ogden book on FACCo; the following just came to mind....not only were Fishbowls virtually ignored in this book, but, also glaringly absent were ANY photos of ex-FACCo buses running out their last years with the "Tee Yay".
If, ever, this book were to be reprinted, the following MUST be included:
1:
AT LEAST a few pages on the Fishbowls (or, better yet, several pages, including photos)
2:
Photos showing the last FACCO buses in service with the "Tee Yay"
3:
Photos/documents, etc. regarding the 1962 strike.....

Here's a nostalgic early 1960-s era of a "FIFTH AVENUE COACH LINES" Old Look (#2320)
Ahhh, remember when BUSES still looked like BUSES.......

During 1946 FACCo ordered Old Looks - TD-4506 and later TD/TDH-4507 - pretty much with replacement of the open-top double-deckers in mind. Am having trouble finding it now, but I have somewhere an image of a "Notice to Passengers" from late 1946 where it was mentioned that these new "Old Looks" were to be put on the #4 route to replace the open tops.
The later 1930's Yellows were still in service on crosstown routes in both Manhattan (6 72nd Street and 20 57th Street) and Queens (16 Elmhurst) well into the late 1950's. That is, if you're enquiring about the rebuilt 740's with the fronts rearranged to resemble their Old Look cousins. The earlier (1935) ones had to have been retired by the earlier '50's.

Here's YELLOW #467, sporting the more modern Old Look front; had these buses had standee windows, the resemblence to Old Looks would have been even greater......

FACCo buses of that ilk would have been in the 1400's.

Here's a timeless, long-ago portrait of FACCo #2667 at South Ferry, one of the handsome and distinctive "buses with the sign that sticks out in front".
Sure wish we had some of these in my area of "Joisey".....

#2667, actually, part of the set allotted to NYCO Division depots . . . 28 more buses built after this and the 'Old Look' era ended forever.

W.B.:
And, of course, SURFACE also operated this type (#3020-#3059)
(too bad the "Tee-Yay" never ordered any of these)
