Considering the nickname given to the narrow rear windows on the Brooklyn trolley buses, I would say that "great shot" is "right on target"(!!) Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Sorry....couldn't resist that "parting shot"...... Wink

Too, I have heard talk of plans (much more recently) of converting the abandoned underground Delancey St. trolley terminal into some sort of underground shopping area/"greenway"; personally, I'd love to see something that might be able to incorporate some transit history, so that folks today could actually SEE what remains (and there really isn't all that much left, aside from the nearly invisible rails still embedded in the floor) of the trolley era.

The last Brooklyn streetcars that used this underground terminal ran in 1948 (via the Willy B); interestingly, PCC's never served this facility, except for fan trips.......

Regarding that trolley over the Wiilliamsburg Bridge...my mother used to ride it as a teenager to Seward Park HS in Manhattan....the "Bridge Local", was only three cents, compared to the el fare of five cents. Often times she would save the fare, by walking....it was the heart of the Great Depression.

Wish I could get a better look at that underground terminal than the glimpse from the Essex Street 'J' station platform...

Besides that terminal and the one at the Manhattan end of the Queensboro Bridge, were there other underground trolley terminal's?

traildriver:

The two underground trolley stations you mentioned were the only ones in New York; in Newark, you had the City Subway terminal at Penn Station (used today by Newark Light Rail) and the lower level of the PS terminal, which was accessed via the long-abandoned Cedar St. subway.

Interestingly, the QB Ry's underground Manhattan terminal was also used by buses.

As I had mentioned earlier, only "standard" type streetcars operated into the underground Delancy St. terminal; the only time that PCC's visited there were on ERA and NRHS excursions, back in the day....

The underground Manhattan terminal of the QB Ry. (look VERY closely at the far left in the first picture, and you'll just be able to glimpse a STEINWAY bus).........

Had to include this interesting photo (1976) of the Roosevelt Island tramway; note the hulking remains of the elevated structure, that, until 1942, carried 2nd Avenue elevated trains across the QB span......talk about lasting forever.....the last trains crossed over 76 years ago, as I type these words....(!!)

Note, too, the classic "Checker" cab on the right, as well as one of the original (since replaced) tram cars.....

I didn't know Steinway operated any bus routes into Manhattan...did they run over the trolley lanes or over the roadway? I thought only Green Line (Q-60)
and FACCO (15) ran over that bridge....

I know that Steinway and the trolley were jointly owned (as well as Queens-Nassau Transit)....

traildriver:

Here is a photo of a QB Rys. trolley about to enter the underground Manhattan terminal; It looks as though the buses would have had used the same roadway as the trolleys to access the underground station's portal......

Agreed! Wink

The QB Ry. had the distinction of being not only the last operating trolley line in New York City, but also, in the State.

It also survived more than a decade beyond the last TARS Manhattan cars.....

Near the end of Brooklyn Bridge streetcar service, a PCC is seen swinging off the span, having left Park Row only a few minutes earlier.

After the BMT elevated trains were discontinued in 1944, the streetcars were shifted over to the former El tracks, to allow for the addition of another vehicular lane in either direction.

All streetcar service over the BB ended in 1950......

Park Row trolley loops, not long before service across the BB was abandoned.

Prior to the demolition of the huge BMT El terminal, these loops were under cover.

Note the Peter Witt car in the background.....

Both the PCC and the Old Looks seen here would today be handsome museum vehicles.......

A PCC is seen heading for Brooklyn across the BB in the waning days of streetcar service; the streetcars are now operating over the former El tracks.

Without the massive Park Row terminal shed and the El trains themselves, the scene looks strangely empty.........

On this chilly Brooklyn day, huddled passengers are glad to board a warm Peter Witt car, near the LIRR terminal; a B&QT St. Louis trolley bus can be seen in the background.........
