That alone proves that, had the TA been of such mind, they could have had some of their 1964-66 group of Flxibles adorned with such 'batwings' as 211 (up to that point) of MaBSTOA's GM 'Fishbowls' had been.

Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

NEVER in my LIFE saw ANYTHING like this!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Being a lifelong "Joisey Boy" I was WELL aquainted with the NJDOT Flex New Looks that began appearing in large numbers in the mid-70's, but I NEVER imagined to see one of our NJDOT Flexies sporting BATWINGS!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

I guess the old saying IS true, after all: "You are NEVER safe from surprise until you are DEAD!" Shocked Shocked

MANY THANKS for posting this rare bird!!!!! Very Happy

I'm not at all sure if this might have been mentioned here or elsewhere......

When did the MTA decide to end the "batwing" era? (any particular reasons?)

What was the last route to use "batwing" New Looks?

To this day, I still regret not taking any photos of these distinctive buses; however, I've still got a busload of memories, regarding these bygone (and eye-catching) buses.....

From what I could gather of old photos, batwings began gradually disappearing by the early to mid-1980's, though the buses themselves would soldier on (albeit in rebuilt form) to the early '90's.

W.B.:

Thanks....this is in sync with my memory; the last I can clearly remember seeing a "batwing" bus was around 1984.

I really missed seeing those huge batwings; they really gave the buses that extra "oomph"!

I used to love seeing them illuminated at night, on the TNJ routes in my area!

Speaking of TNJ . . . and its predecessor, Public Service Coordinated Transport . . . the side roll signs on their batwings were apparently confined to the right side (on which the passengers made their entrance and exit, given how on "the other side" there was no side sign):

And over in L.A., both GM and Flxible 'New Looks' had the 'batwings' . . .

W.B.:

AWESOME PHOTOS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

That PSNJ Fishbowl on the #44 brought back a LOT of great memories of when I would take the old #144 (MOUNTAIN COACHES) into Newark to railfan the now-retired City Subway PCC's!

The sign for "WVNJ" also brought back great memories, as Mom kept our kitchen radio tuned to this popular easy-listening station for many years! (I also can remember seeing later "batwing" ads on TNJ buses for the station, "WVNJoy"

Man, where have the years gotten to?? Rolling Eyes

Again, GREAT photos of when BUSES were BUSES!!!!!! Wink

PSNJ/TNJ also operated a #44 on the HUDSON Division (this route were based at the now-closed Union City garage (known to locals for decades as the "carbarns")

I knew this old PS route very well for many years; here we have a batwing TNJ Fishbowl at Journal Square in 1973, prior to the opening of the Transportation Center.........

Remember the days when OTB* seemed to be on almost every corner?

*You can see where the side sign box over the rear door was once located, now covered over by the OTB ad.
