Speaking of "Chock Full O' Nuts", we cannot forget another long-gone, once-commomplace eatery, "Horn & Hardart".

Here, at a still-bustling JSQ (1972) we see a BERGEN AVENUE Fishbowl alongside a R&T Old Look, with H & H on the left (going by the photo, it looks as though it had already closed)

The entire block to the left of the buses no longer exists.

Where have the years gone.......... Sad

.........In thinking back, RED & TAN not only provided many commuters with safe, dependable service over the decades, but also, provided the bus enthusiasts of the day with much action.

R&T operated out of the PABT, the GWB terminal, as well as Journal Square; again, there was both great convenience for riders and great photo opportunities for bus fans.

Today, many people, I'm sure, would be quite surprised to learn of the old "99 S" and the many areas it once served........

RED & TAN's affiliation with HUDSON BUS COMPANY (which also operated the NHBL local lines) is evident here in this timeless view from 1981.

Note that Fishbowl #68 (sporting the R&T's then-new paint scheme) is displaying a sign for the #4, a long-established NHBL route.

Another R&T Fishbowl (sporting the old R&T colors) is seen following; both buses have just exited the Lincoln Tunnel, and are seen in Weehawken.

I know this area very well; a great many "Fallen Flags" passed through here, back in the day.............

Here is an interesting picture showing SHBL's faithful old #B-8, far off the beaten path of Kennedy Boulevard (Jersey City-Bayonne) at Clifton, Staten Island, back in 1971.

This might have been a fan trip; note the elevated SIRT station at the rear; the SIRT was then still using the old 1925 ME-1 cars (I rode those old relics too many times to count, growing up in the 60's); these venerable old cars were replaced by new R-44's just a few years later.................

The Journal Square of my memories, 1972.

Here we see R&T Old Look #37 (note the driver sporting a white shirt and tie!) holding down a local route, while flanked by Fishbowls of the DOWNTOWN BUS CO. and BERGEN AVENUE.

As I have noted previously, the entire business block on the left no longer exists; all buses use the JSQ TRANSPORTATION CENTER, as they have since mid-1974.

So much nostalgia, here..........

According to the 1969 SI Bus map the only SI express service was the 'R8X' from Port Richmond to Adams Street in Brooklyn. By the 1974 Bus map many express routes to Manhattan had been established.

Those maps seem to only indicate what the MTA operated...private operator's were not included

True, they are MTA maps. I've never seen a comparable map showing the old private routes except on the large SI Hagstrom maps of the day.

The private expresses that connected Staten Island with Manhatten via New Jersey, were not a part of the city bus 'system', in the way that the private city franchised routes were, strictly between the boroughs or wholly within New York State (Westchester and Nassau for example). There were no city franchises involved, no transfer arrangements, etc. Hence, they were not included on MTA maps of that era....
