The last in a series of one-way conversions of major Manhattan thoroughfares as had been implemented since 1948, goes into effect on this date, with Fifth Avenue between 138th Street and Washington Square North, and Broadway between 23rd and 14th Streets, converted to one-way southbound; and Madison Avenue between 23rd and 135th Streets, to one-way northbound. This set was done seven weeks ahead of schedule, announced three days before while the transit strike was still in effect - and on the first full day of the subways and buses back after the strike's end. The following bus routes are impacted by these changes (with a few clarifications to mitigate any confusion that had erupted over the years, namely on a certain online encyclopedia):
- 1 (ex-NYCO) Madison Avenue via 135th Street: Southbound buses now run south on Fifth Avenue between 135th and 40th Streets (except for a detour along Mount Morris Park between 124th and 120th Streets), then run east on 40th Street to Park Avenue and the rest of its route (by this point, northbound buses' transition point from Park Avenue to Madison Avenue is at 39th Street). Also at or about this point, the southern terminus is extended on weekdays to South Ferry (on weekends, buses' southern terminus is 8th Street and Fourth Avenue, with southbound buses, from south on Broadway, running east on 4th Street and north on the Bowery and Fourth Avenue to its south end.) The description of this route is hereby changed to Fifth and Madison Avenues via 135th Street.
- 2 (ex-NYCO) Madison Avenue via 116th Street: Southbound buses moved to Fifth Avenue between 116th and 8th Streets, then travel east on 8th Street to its terminus on Fourth Avenue. Route description changed to Fifth and Madison Avenues via Lenox Avenue.
- 2 (ex-FACCo) Fifth and Seventh Avenues: Northbound buses moved to Madison Avenue. From its southern terminus on 8th Street and Fourth Avenue, buses now run west on 9th Street, north on University Place, east on 14th Street, north on Union Square East and Park Avenue South, west on 25th Street, and north on Madison Avenue to 110th Street. (Some buses that terminate on 8th east of Fifth Avenue - marked as "Washington Square" on front roll signs - then operate one block east on 8th and north on University Place to 14th Street, and then follow the rest of the path as described. Also, by contrast, ex-NYCO 2, between 9th and 14th Streets, runs straight north on Fourth Avenue, as does 1.) The new route description is Fifth and Madison Avenues via Seventh Avenue; around the summer, the route number is modified for an interval of eight years to 2A.
- 3 Fifth and Convent or St. Nicholas Avenues: Northbound buses moved to Madison Avenue; route path is same as that followed by 2(A).
- 4 Fifth and Fort Washington Avenues: Northbound buses now operate north on Madison Avenue between 32nd and 110th Streets.
- 5 Fifth Avenue / Riverside Drive: Northbound buses now run north on Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) between Houston and 57th Streets, as opposed to up to 8th Street as before this date.
- 15 Fifth Avenue / Jackson Heights: Southern terminus cut back to 25th Street and Fifth Avenue, and northbound buses moved to Madison Avenue between 23rd and 57th Streets.
It is also within this time period that the 7 Broadway, Columbus and Lenox Avenues line's southern terminus is extended to 14th Street and Union Square West, with northbound buses starting out from there then running west on 14th Street to Sixth Avenue.

Of the routes that constitute the "Fifth and Madison Avenues Line" as detailed in that said online encyclopedia, there were in fact five such lines both before and after the conversions - not six lines before and four after. (FACCo's 1 - Fifth Avenue line had been discontinued at the point of the 1962 strike against Fifth Avenue Coach Lines and Surface Transit that led to the city takeover of all their routes and the establishment of Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority [MaBSTOA] to oversee them; and the NYCO and FACCo 2 routes remained separate and distinct, with the latter remaining as 2A even after the 1969 elimination of the ex-NYCO 2 upon the startup of the Third-Lexington-Lenox 101A [now M102] route; only after that 1969 change did there come to be four such routes constituting the Fifth and Madison Avenues Line.)
