Here we have three views of Fifth Avenue Coach in Jackson Heights...

First, FACCo model J ready for service

Secondly, FACCo model J picking up passengers ready for the ride into Manhattan. The building was known as the Towers, located from 80th to 81st Streets between 37th Avenue and Northern Blvd.

Thirdly, a very interesting view, this is a FACCo coach model L, double decker. The Towers again, this time 81st Street and 37th Avenue.

The question regarding this view is how this bus operated, if at all, under the El on Roosevelt Avenue?? The reason for the Yellow Coach model 720, Queen Mary, was because it had the perfect height to run under the El.

Can anybody explain...

Clearance would have been an issue not only under the el but also on the Queensboro Bridge. As FACCO ordered the 720s to meet those requirements, I have to believe that earlier double deckers on the 15 did as well.

By the way, the Towers complex is between 34th Avenue and Northern Blvd.

The double decker in the photo was built specially for route 15. It was only 12ft 5in high, full, 12ft 7in empty) and was known as the 'Clearall' The low height was achieved by having a lower deck seating configuration of 3 + 1 with standing room only in the off-set aisle and single seats. The upper deck was a conventional 2 + 2 configuration, but standing room was only possible in the stepped down aisle and over the right side seats. Although the Yellow Coach 720 had centre aisles on both decks the the upper deck had only 5ft 2 1/2in headroom and the overall height was 12ft 8 1/2in full, 12ft 11 1/2in empty.
