I well recall curtains gathered vertically between windows on some long-distance coaches, particularly on New England Transportation. The side view linked below clearly shows curtains inside a Red and Tan commuter bus. I presume the curtain's chief use was the same as those sliding plastic window covers on airplane windows: to keep out a bothersome angle of the sun. LIRR and NY Central commuter trains had roller shades for the same reason, until they became a maintenance expense, and tinted windows replaced the shades. Any comments on curtains inside motor coaches? Thanks. Joe McMahon

IIRC, most GM Parlor Coaches in the era before the 'Air-Rides', had railroad style pull-down shades on their small side windows...coaches like the PD-4103, 4101, 4151 and 3751 'Silversides', and probably most other's from all manufacturer's in the 30's, 40's, and early 50's.
When the PD-4104, 4501 and later, came out with the tinted picture windows, that ended that practice.
These pull-down shades may have been an extra cost factory option, so not all may have had them. As for curtains...I think those went out for the most part, when conventional, front-engined coaches disappeared in the mid '30's...

Interestingly, MCI brought back a mesh type pull down shade as an option around the late '80's and later....

Shades and curtains were a maintenance headache, for sanitary reasons, as well as vandalism...
