Here are the last buses that Surface Transit purchased before the New Looks arrived.
These are the 10 MACK C-49-DT. They had rear lounge seats, fluorescent lights and a privacy partition for the driver (the farebox was placed inside the partition) like their TDH-5106 counterparts
Question...If the City had not taken over the private bus companies in 1962 I wonder if Fifth Avenue would have continued buying GM New Looks and Surface Transit would have bought Flxibles??

I meant to ask whether these would have been among the first buses in NYC to have placeholders for advertisements on the outer fronts, sides and backs. I know for years, bus companies were prohibited by law from displaying advertising on the outside of their buses. Or was it the first New Looks that started out of the gate with outer ad displays?
I suspect FACL would have remained a GM customer for New Looks - but the TDH-5303's that first came out in 1963 would have looked more like the sides of the 5301's they ordered (i.e. four windows on the double door exit instead of two, and an emergency door on the other side), rather than the "TA look" that spilled over to the city's orders for new buses for MaBSTOA. The ST division may well have divvied up between GM and Flxible, who knows?
