"New Kid On The BlocK" (5th Avenue Coach #1707, when new) *

*There is another picture showing #1707, obviously taken during the same "publicity" session, showing the same lady about to board, in the 1954 children's book, "BIG CITY TRANSPORTATION" (Urell, Jennings, Weinberg) |

Sidenote:
The 1954 children's book ("BIG CITY TRANSPORTAION" also has great photos showing other New York buses, as well as the subways and the 3rd Avenue El's MUDC cars (sadly, no double deckers on 5th, as they had already vanished by the time this book was published)
I was lucky to grab a copy (via eBay) at $9.95, a couple years back......I happily recommend it to the "Noo Yawk" guys here......

Methinks that's from that same 1946 Madison Avenue Coach-oriented bunch as 1700 that plied the (M)11 on Ninth and 50th c.1962 . . . |

You and I are on the same wave length on this one......
According to James Greller's "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT SYSTEM BUSES & TROLLEY COACHES", the earliest square window Old Looks shown are the 1948 TH-4507's:
2000-2129
2200-2261
Earliest paired window Old Looks were the 1948 TDH-5101's:
4500-4899

Here is a photo showing YELLOW demonstrator #2500 in classic "5th Avenue Coach" livery; this bus is also seen in Oliver J. Ogden's book......

Joe:
By that late date, "Old Looks"-type buses were being built by GM, which had bought out YELLOW (I'm guessing photo was taken earlier than 1946, being bus was a demo, unless it was still on the roster at the time)
The photo in Greller's book shows #2500 operating on Route #15, laying over at Madison Square.
The earliest GM Old Looks purchased by 5th Avenue coach (according to Guy E. Martin's "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUSES" were 43 TDH-4506's, which were purchased in 1945, to enable "open topper" retirement.........

All:
Ties to 5th Avenue Coach were quite evident in the 55 NY Omnibus YELLOW TD-4502's, which were ordered in 1941.
The "GO THE MOTOR COACH WAY" legend, so long associated with 5Th Avenue Coach was emblazoned across the dash.
These buses were numbered 800-854; these buses were later supplemented by an additional 4505's, in 4 lots, lowest number #855, highest numbered 916
Those buses not in sequences were diverted to other ODT properties......

Let me add the following to the above comments...
If you are referring to page 4 of Greller's book, #2500 is not laying over at Madison Square nor in route 15 service but in Brooklyn as a demo for the Board of Transportation (this resulted in the purchase of the TDH-5101s). The year might have been late 1947 early 1948 after #2500 was rebuilt and had a GM instead of a Yellow Coach emblem.
Guy Martin is correct in that the earliest square window Old Looks ordered by Fifth Avenue were the TDH-4506s. However, #2500 arrived as a demo for Fifth Avenue in 1940.
Actually the earliest square window Old Look owned by the Board of Transportation shown in Greller's book was the TD-4506 (page 1) inherited by the Board of Transportation from Eastside Omnibus and Comprehensive Omnibus not the TDH-4507s.
Besides #2500 in 1939-40, the earliest square window Old Look buses that ran on the streets of Manhattan or for that matter metropolitan New York were the TD-4502s purchased by New York City Omnibus (55 total, 1941) and Surface Transportation (50 total, 1940-41)
The NYCO TD-4502s were followed by 97 TD-4505s and operated by Eighth Avenue Coach.
Neither the TD-4502s nor the TD-4505s were taken over by MaBSTOA. |

MaBSTOA 15:
My error entirely; the photo I was SUPPOSED to be recalling was on page #99 in Ogden's book on 5th Avenue Coach; a "Queen Mary" is parked just behind #2500.
And, as usual, I greatly appreciate your input and historical data that you share here.
Another interesting photo is on page 84 in Guy E. Martin's book; this shows TD-4506 #4013, with ST lettering, but with 5th Avenue Coach's "GO THE MOTOR COACH WAY" above the windows.
The caption states that this is how the bus would have appeared when it went to MABSTOA in 1963; the bus would later be renumbered #1153 as a MABSTOA coach.
When 5th Avenue Coach owned it, it was numbered #2222......

NYO - It was an easy ID. I grew up on 43rd St and Queens Blvd and walked past that spot numerous times. |
